Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
In the passage the tone of the author is hesitation and depression. For example, the author mentioned in line 108-110 “we equip with freshly sharpened knives, strip naked and then invited him to stand close”. This means when a man and women are in a relationship, there is always a possibility of one of them getting hurt. The author also used imagery and personification to portrayed how dangerous it can be to enter into a relationship. For example, the knives represented how easily someone can get hurt in a relationship.
English 1010 was an amazing class, during the period that the class was going on I was able to develop my communication skills and become aware of the world around me and how individuals operate according to what the society wants from them. I am here tonight to announce my candidacy for the presidency and I would start off by expressing my gratitude for your support because let's face it, I wouldn’t be here without you and to be honest, I wasn't even going to run for the presidency but I live by a certain creed, one that runs in my blood and this being that you should never accept the world as it appears to be, always dare to see it for what it could be. But is natural for us to accept the illusions of hope. We opt to shut our eyes from the painful truth.
This year has been a ride to say the least… We came in thinking that we would be taught by Dr.Rice, a woman known by the to be eccentric at times but incredibly intelligent and wise. The reality of the situation was that halfway through the year we were removed from her teaching and put in a different class altogether. This change was sudden and honestly a major inconvenience to the class as a whole. We did learn yes but it felt rushed and and spastic like the whole time we were cramming info into our brains rather than taking our time to learn and digest the material.
My second project was the rhetorical analysis which weighted 45% of my grade. For my second project, I have to pick a reliable and unreliable source that relates to Kennedy’s assassination conspiracy theories. I have to make 3 separate papers for a reliable source, unreliable source, and comparison of two sources that would be presented in class. This project was a great learning experience because I get to learn and identify the differences between reliable and unreliable sources. From this project, I really struggled with finding the right unreliable source because it was harder to find on the search results.
Many share the misconception that racism is a problem of the past. To them, prejudice has entirely ceased to exist, and today, humanity bears witness to a nondiscriminatory world. The flippant citing of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream,” perhaps even validates this new, egalitarian society emerging; however, such a society is merely an illusion. In fact, a minor offense as simple as citing “I Have a Dream” may not seem a big deal; however, many anthropologists contend that the telltale signs of institutionalized racism are present in these seemingly innocent actions. Furthermore, scholars Elizabeth Barnert and Terry Jones examine the state of institutionalized racism in their respective articles.
In this interactive oral, the class was given two different examples where a rapper displays a theme through content and tone. One of these was through a song called “Dreams” by J. Cole where in it, a man wishes to murder another hoping to have a chance at love with the victim’s wife. In the other example, we referenced to a music video for the song “Stan” by Eminem where a man kills himself after never receiving a response to his numerous fan mail to Eminem. These artists used a technique in their songs that Gabriel Marquez too uses in Love in the Time of Cholera. We noted that Marquez infests this book with rich imagery giving love more of an embodied essence making it mirror Florentino’s emotions, saturated and ubiquitous.
As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Donovan Livingston, a graduate at Harvard Graduate School of Education, has similar views on education. His passionate and inspiring speech called “Lift Off” was given at HGSE’s Commencement Ceremony on May 25, 2016. The speech discusses the importance of education as well as the obstacles and injustices students, especially those of color, have experienced throughout history in getting an education. Livingston’s graduating classmates who are becoming teachers, as well as teachers and educators in general, are the audience of his speech.
Throughout this course, the assignments I have completed have assured that I have difficulties in writing. However, I have managed to learn and understand how to write a rhetorical analysis essay. In addition, I have learned the key elements of the genre science fiction and managed to read some interesting stories; such as, Understand and Dividing by Zero. Aside from this, I plan to show an image of stairs to symbolize the progression of my writing. I will utilize my notes and assignments to not only validate my struggles, but also to exhibit my improvement in writing.
This class has taught me the foundation of how to become a rhetorician, and how that can benefit me in more ways than just English papers. I’ve learned key points needed to construct a successful argument in order to persuade an audience, whether that be on paper for a professor or in a job interview in the future. So far, I’ve written many prompts and slack posts. One of my shortcomings is speaking in my own voice in the paper and not fully delving into the proper lexicon. This is something I’ll be sure to nail in the final.
Straight from the heart is a wonderful, but depressing passage narrated by a journalist named Tim Collins. The passage is about the tragic speech spoken by Marie Fatayi- Williams and the terroristic incident that lead to the possible killing of her son Anthony Fatayi- Williams. Marie’s speech is fueled by a couple different topics, which in their entirety explain how she feels about the loss of her son to be a traumatic event. These topics make the speech very powerful and meaningful to the audience according to Collins. The narration is primarily to explain why Marias speech is so powerful and why it inspired and touched so many people’s hearts, while Marie defies the pointlessness of terroristic acts followed by the tragedy.
