Another example of a bad decision Odysseus made was when he made his crew stay in polyphemus’ cave, when they wanted to take the food and leave. Here is an example of someone on his crew discussing this, “Let 's make away with the cheeses, then come back-/ hurry, drive the lambs and kids from the pens/ to our swift ship, put out to sea at once!/ But I would not give way-” (9. 252-255). If Odysseus was a good leader he wouldn’t have risked anything happening to his crew, he would have just taken the food and left. As a result of this bad choice, many men in Odysseus’ crew were killed and eaten by Polyphemus.
After the three murderers killed Banquo, they go to recount the news to Macbeth. Showing no reaction to the news of his former comrade’s death, Macbeth only thinks of himself: “Then comes my fit again. I had else been perfect” (Shakespeare 99). Macbeth, asking if Fleance is dead, is only tormented after hearing that Fleance escaped and remains a threat to his crown. Macbeth’s quick transition of concern from Banquo to Fleance exhibits his disregard to the people close to him, a distinct behavior often tied to sociopathic people.
The two arguments at hand are- “Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against Helping the Poor and A Modest Proposal.” Lifeboat Ethics is written by author Garrett Hardin. Hardin is known for his theory of “the tragedy of the commons.” Hardin’s ironic approach made the reader become disconnected while reading the article.
Piggy nodded propitiatingly” (Golding 174). Piggy is trying to satisfy and calm Ralph since he is able to see that Ralph is losing his leadership skills. Fear is setting into Ralph because he is neglecting the fire and is beginning to accept the island as somewhere he will stay. Through Ralph the pull and instinct to lean into destruction becomes more noticeable in the story.
When General Zaroff offers Rainsford a chance at a hunting expedition on the island, Rainsford turns down his offer, “Thank you, I’m a hunter, not a murderer.” Rainsford believes that there is a difference between hunting and murder, even though they both involve killing other beings. Once they see someone else doing the same job to a more extreme level, people may begin to doubt for their actions. As General Zaroff tried to convince his guest that they were playing the same game together, Rainsford argued that they were not, just because of the different tastes in prey. This leads to Rainsford’s change in seeing how hunting is dangerous in all
Odysseus is a good leader in that he uses his wits to get his men out of trouble. As Odysseus and his men prepare to face Kharybdis and Skylla, his men are nervous, so Odysseus reminds them “‘Have we never been in danger before this? More fearsome, is it now, than when the kyklopes penned us in his cave? What power we had! Did I not keep my
This is seen when the squadron was short on food and Xavier asks Elijah if he is hungry. Elijah responds by saying, “I have found the one thing I am truly talented at and that is killing men. I do not need food when I have this.” (Boyden, 320). This quote signifies that Elijah views killing men as a sport rather than an assigned job.
Jacks blood lust is starting to affect the group and the others chances of being rescued from the island. Without the fire, they would never be rescued and it would not have be good because the group would have become worse. Ralph would follow these rules and he just expected others to pull their weight. When Ralph does not follow the rules, nothing good comes from it. when he first hunts a pig, he starts to get in with the group and gets very excited.
“Food can enliven social relations, enrich spiritual affairs, and enhance an individual’s sense of well-being, it can be used to threaten, reward, cajole, or punish and in other ways manipulate behavior” (Ramsay). Miss Emma, Tante Lou and Grant visit Henri Pichot to ask if he would be able to make Jefferson into a man before he gets into that chair. On the way back, Grant and Tante Lou get into fight and instead of staying for her cooking he rejects it to eat in town. She felt hurt when he turned down the offered food. “By rejecting food, one also rejects the person offering it” (Ramsay).
As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. (I Cor. 13.4-8) The passage reminds, or rather tells, the reader what love should be and what attributes love has. What could strike the reader as most important is the fact that, according to Paul, love bares all, believes, all, hopes all, and endures all.
“His face without expression,I could not tell whether he laughed inwardly or not”(Rebecca 37). Gatsby, a man that has suddenly become and rich has moved to West egg, and Mr. De Winter, a man who has tragically lost his first wife, both share similarities between each other. In the novels, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier , and ,The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald , they both share strong comparisons and contrasts like how Mr. Winter’s and Gatsby 's ways of presenting themselves are both similar.
Nat who was a kind impatient and smart boy couldn’t leave the chandlery without permission. The French could have sunk the ship that he was sailing on. The second reason that Nat shouldn’t have been forced to live and work at the chandlery is that Nat could have been helpful with his family. His sister who was kind thoughtful and easy going might not have
travels with his mother to america on the S.S Hato, a cargo ship headed to america but is torpedoed Phillip is hit on the head with a plank and goes unconscious when he regains conscious he find that he is on a raft with a black man. The book vividly explains how Timothy looks, this is a negative connotation showing that Phillip immediately disliked him by his physical features. Timothy was being kind ,understanding that Phillip is not used to some people and will be upset from what he has gone through. Timothy tries to survive and catches fish for them to eat but since there is no fire to cook the fish they have to eat it raw, Phillip uses this to prove that they are “different”
I believe that Elie and his father chose to not act in such cruel ways because they still had pieces of their humanity within their souls. Most of the prisoners were too far gone, but Elie and his father held on dear to their humanity because they would rather die as a human, than live as an animal. It is difficult to decide when it is acceptable to act in an inhumane way, but for the person in the situation, they only care about survival. Night, by Elie Wiesel has changed my way of thinking about humanity and how it is difficult to make the right decision while in a desperate situation. Elie and his father were able to hang on to their humanity because they
