In Richard Seaver’s response to the Coca Cola executive, Ira C. Herbert, he replies in a tranquil manner as if he has no worry of losing the right to the use of the slogan. Grove Press respectfully acknowledges its understanding of Coca Cola’s concern, but state that “by a vote of seven to six” the continued use of the slogan had been decided (lines 17). Throughout the first half of his letter, Seaver repetitively reassures the Coca Cola Company that Grove Press wishes NOT to steal the slogan but rather share it. This repetition is essential to Seaver’s argument as it creates a sense of trust for the reader. He maintains a conscious naivety by using derisive underlying sarcasm masked by tactful verbal articulation in response to the authoritative and condescending tone of Herbert's letter, which allows for a persuasive and entertaining argument. Though Seaver uses humor to establish his purpose, he maintains the mutual respect between the two parties, despite him believing the conflict to be childlike and absurd. Since Herbert’s argument can be interpreted in multiple ways, Seaver attacks a fallacious interpretation of Herbert’s argument: the reason he is against the two companies using the same slogan is because consumers will be unable to tell the physical difference between a book and a beverage. Seaver says that “in order to avoid confusion between the respective products due to the slogan, each sales personnel is to make sure that what the customer wants is the book, rather than a Coke,” and adds that he fears “those who read (his) ad may well tend to go out and buy a Coke rather than (his) book.” Seaver also recognizes that Herbert cannot use the threat of the law and therefore ironically mentions his “strong sentiments concerning the First Amendment” and willingness to “defend to the death” Herbert’s right to use the slogan, even though his response was intended to regard his own rights.
Herbert addresses the problem of using the slogan with association of the book as there will "be a likelihood of confusion" as there is a "connection with our respective products" ( Herbert ,9-11.) Herbert brought the flawed idea that people would confuse the book and Coca Cola as they have the same slogan. However, Seaver counteracts this with verbal irony saying that the public would "mistake a book by a Harlem schoolteacher for a six-pack of Coca Cola" (Seaver,5-6.) Seaver distinguishes the flaw of Herbert's argument as people would not connect the two products even if they had the same slogan. This proves Herbert's argument as logically incorrect as the public would be able to tell which product is sponsored by which company, Coca Cola sodas by the Coca Cola Company and the Diary of a Harlem Schoolteacher by the Grove
Seaver, executive vice president of the Grove Press, proposes his thoughts on what Mr. Herbert addressed by using hyperbole and understatement in order to imply how they won’t use the slogan “It’s a real thing” any more. Mr. Seaver mentions how he will help Coca-Cola with their ownership of the slogan by explaining that they will ¨defend to the death your right to use ‘It’s a real thing’ in any advertising you care to¨ (Dear Coca-Cola, Mr. Seaver). Although he is giving his aid to Coca-Cola for the use of the slogan. When he says that they will “defend to the death” he is using a hyperbole in order to make the solution and his proposal seem helpful, when in reality, it seems as if he were expressing it as a joke. His argument might seem as a friendly offer, but Mr. Seaver makes it seem as if he doesn’t care about the importance of the discussion on the ownership of the slogan, which diminishes his credibility and reputation from the work status that he has.
He doesn’t view it as a serious problem and implied that coca cola and the printing press are nothing alike and they have had a “far more direct and deadly threat” before with another book. Even thought, Seaver’s letter was full of sarcasm and insults he has a more persuasive argument. Ira C. Herbert and Richard Seaver used different rhetorical devices and strategies to argue the same subject. Herbert uses historical facts to strengthen his argument while Seaver relied on Sarcasm and mockery.
Today, texting has become the most widely used communication technique for teenagers and young adults. It is written in completely informal language and it has no literature value in it. Although the critics believe texting is destroying literature value, McWhorter has another opinion in mind. McWhorter thinks that texting is another form of language that is developed by teenagers. It is the creation of a brand new language evolving from the old literature.
Everyone wants the truth and with Leonard Pitts Jr. you get it. Pitts writes for the Miami Herald daily newspaper in southern Florida. His style is very unique in all of his writings, and different from other authors. Pitts mostly focuses on the outbreak of the daily news. For instance, Don’t Lower The Bar on Education Standards is strictly states lowering the bar will not fix anything it will only decrease the standards.
Herbert begins his Letter by acknowledging the effects of having similar slogans and their outcomes. Through the appeal to logic, Herbert claims that having the same slogan will cause confusion between both Coca-Cola and the book Diary of a Harlem Schoolteacher, he indicates “There will always be a likelihood of confusion as to the source of sponsorship of the goods” (p 3). Although his logic is weak, Herbert shows Mr. Seaver the problems that may occur since they have the same slogan in order to convince Mr. Seaver to change his advertisement theme. The effect of using this logic was to reinforce the idea that having similar slogans will cause problems between the two companies. In Richard Louv’s essay, The Child in the Woods, he uses multiple rhetorical strategies to develop an argument regarding the widening gap between people and nature. He presents a convincing argument of how today’s children are so caught up in the new technology that they don’t take the time to embrace nature and all it has to offer. Louv incorporated hyperboles and into his essay to strengthen his argument about mankind and nature. Louv uses hyperbole when he states, “The sale man’s jaw dropped.”
In his passage from “Last Child in the Woods,” Richard Louv uses various rhetorical strategies in order to make his audience more supportive of his argument. The passage discusses the connection, or really the separation, between people and nature. On this subject, Louv argues the necessity for people to redevelop their connection with nature. His use of tone, anecdotes, rhetorical questions, and factual examples all help develop the pathos and logos of his piece.
In Niccolo Machiavelli's book, The Prince (1513), he evaluates on how a prince can be a successful leader. Machiavelli’s purpose of this guidebook was to construct his argument to the rising ruler Giuliano de Medici for when he comes to power in Florence. He adopts a casual but authoritative tone in order to convince the prince that Machiavelli’s evaluation on how to be the best prince, is the right thing for the prince to do without coming off as he knows more than the prince or is trying to intimidate him.. Machiavelli’s reference to previous rulers and whether their tactics failed or succeeded helps to benefit his credibility along with his allusion to historic text. He appeals to our logic by simply stating a prince can only do what is within his power to control, and his use of an analogy furthers his argument.
Admiral William H. Mcraven addressed the 2014 graduating class at the University of Austin, Texas with more than eight thousand students in attendance. The address given by Adm. Mcraven touched the hearts of millions from all around the world by his inspirational message of how one person can change the world if they simply helped change the lives of ten others in their lifetime. I chose this speech for my rhetorical analysis because of the simple message it portrays, how helping a few can eventually help many. Adm. Mcraven’s address was especially effective for his audience, much due to how he relates to the students by reminiscing of the day he graduated from UT while providing advice for young college graduates preparing to begin their adult lives.
The United States is made up of some of the most diverse and interesting cultures in the world. Jamila Lyiscott proves this by showing her different dialects and how they are all equally important. Lyiscott believes that the way she speaks towards her parents, towards her friends, and towards her colleagues are all one in the same. Throughout the entirety of her speech, Lyiscott changes up her vocal patterns and dialects so that the audience can understand first hand what each of these dialects are. When she talks about her father, Lyiscott uses her native tongue, when she talks to her fellow neighbors and close friends she switches it up to a more urbanized dialect, and when she is in school she masks the other two dialects with a professional sounding language.
Rhetorical appeals reveal the hidden message the character is trying to convey. The rhetoric also highlights the character’s emotions, feelings and the significance of the text. It allows readers to gain a better understanding of the characters. Arthur Miler, the author of The Crucible, highlights the importance of mass hysteria through rhetorical appeals. John Proctor, the tragic hero is a loyal, honest, and kind-hearted individual.
In this passage, Ezekiel Cheever responds to John Proctor’s curiosity about what a needle in a poppet signifies and why his wife Elizabeth is being accused of using witchcraft against Abigail Williams. Cheever’s response explains his knowledge of how Abigail was afflicted, his possession of strong evidence against Elizabeth Proctor as a court official, and both his and the town of Salem’s tendency to turn to superstition to explain mysterious events. As Cheever explains how Abigail was afflicted by the needles from the poppet, he utilizes a simile when he states that Abigail fell to the floor, after being stabbed, “like a struck beast” (74). Cheever says this to emphasize the abruptness and intensity of the situation and how significant it is that there is no visual perception of anyone
Mark Twain, an 18th century humorist, was known for his critical and satirical writing. In one of his most famous essays, “ Fenimore Coopers Literary Offenses” Twain addresses Coopers inability to realistically develop a “situation” and his failure to effectively back up his stories in order for them to be more plausible. To dramatically convey his unimpressed and sarcastic attitude, he applies biting diction, metaphors and hypophora throughout this work . By continuously using biting diction, Twain develops a mocking tone towards Fenimore Cooper’s incapability to create even the simplest of storylines. In the title of the work a sarcastic tone is evident; the word choice is utilized to reinforce the argument stating how Coopers work is an offense to the world of literature.
