It is known that there are many benefits to your health due to riding a horse, many of which improve your life quality. A specific example of one of these health benefits is blood pressure. The effects on your blood pressure due to riding a horse improves over time with consistent riding. To properly measure blood pressure, you must follow a certain order of specific steps. To measure, you can use the arteries in your arm or neck, and either use an inflatable or digital cuff (BMJ, 2001). Regular exercise helps regulate blood pressure and keep it at a healthy level. Riding horses help the rider maintain balance, gain core strength, improve their posture, and tone muscles as well (Lees 2017). When riding a horse you can burn many calories. For riding horseback you can burn up to 200 calories without even getting on the horse. Just getting the horse ready for an hour ride takes a lot. When you get on the horse to ride, not only does it help your core and tone your body; for one hour of riding you can burn up to 360 calories (Sherwood Riding School, 2018). “We all know riding horses is good exercise,” Sigler said. “Riding a horse for 45 minutes at a walk, trot and canter can burn up to 200 calories. It you do something a bit more strenuous such as cutting or reining, that can come out to nearly seven calories per minute for the entire length of the riding period” (Fannin, 2015). Sigler made an example of riding a horse at a trot, a jog to humans, and also reining for a research project on the benefits of riding a horse. 20 different people did a 45 minute test with the horse to measure their blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen. Shortly after a horse is born it should be trained without a saddle on the ground (Conditioning Young Horses” 3). This will teach a young horse to show respect for the trainer and give the horse a positive mindset. Exercising a young horse can be extremely beneficial for the development of their muscles, joints, and tendons (“Conditioning Young Horses 1”). The first three years of a horse’s life are very important for the mental and physical development of the young horse. A young horse will normally be easier to train under saddle once you have developed a relationship with the horse on the ground.
Reading this book, I was reminded of the life lessons I have learned growing up around horses and how much in common there is with the high-ends and people such as myself. Growing up, handling equine was just common knowledge for everyone, and because of that I’ve learned that there needs to be a bond and some trust between the rider and horse.
These riders are the ones that couldn’t care less about their horse. These are the people that leave their horse tied to the fence so that somebody will come and take care of it. They are usually gone before somebody notices their horse. This is almost abuse. If the care less riders end up having to actually take care of their horse, then they usually put them out in the pasture without checking to make sure they have water, feed, etc.

Equine Therapy and the Outstanding Effects Therapeutic riding is a type of therapy for individuals with many different forms of disabilities. These disabilities can be emotional, physical, mental, or a mixture of these. I got the privilege to spend 10 hours at an equine therapy ranch and was able to experience first-hand the impact riding has on the individuals who come out to the ranch.
