His first fight in the Civil War happened in Cheat Mountain, Virginia on September 11, 1861. Even though the Union won the battle Lee’s reputation still arose. But when the secret plan was soon discovered by the Union commander George McClellan there was no surprise and once they got there they knew so the two armies faced each other at the battle of Antietam. Even though his plans were out he gave an amazing and smart battle to McClellan, but after a long and terrifying war Lee and his army dropped out of the battle. Soon after that they had an amazing win against the Union at Chancellorsville. After winning this battle it gave Lee confidence in his

Before the war, President Abraham Lincoln tried to sway him to take command of the Union army. However, Lee, like most in his time, was state first, And if Virginia succeeded so would he. Virginia did succeed. In 1861 they
As the political leader of the Confederacy, he assigned Robert E. Lee command of the Army of Northern Virginia in June 1862. He, at first, was a very popular leader. As the war went on, things grew worse for him. Davis failed to raise sufficient money to fight the American Civil War and could not obtain sufficient recognition and help for the Confederacy from foreign governments (Funk and Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia). Davis had to also deal with internal tensions such as a dissident Vice President, a squabbling Congress, and the overwhelming inflation of the Southern
He always has a game plan when it comes to battles. He keeps his calm and is able to handle anything that comes his way. He thinks on his feet and knows how to out smart his enemy. General Lee has not been know to lose his temper.
Victories were only won by Lee’s aggressiveness on and off of the battlefield. Lee endured the bloodiest days of the war and still kept urging his army on even until the very end. Even after the Battle Robert at Gettysburg, which almost completely destroyed his army, he pushed forward. After fighting a battle he made this remark to General James Longstreet, “It is well war is so terrible-we would grow too fond of it” (Robert E. Lee www.history.com). By 1865 the fate of the war was clear.
Robert E Lee was also a great General, and he won and lost battles. General Robert E Lee’s rank was the general for the Confederate States of America (Civil War Trust). There were 8 key battles that Robert E Lee fought in, they all include the Battle of Antietam in September 16-18,1862, Battle of Fredericksburg in December 11-15, 1862, Battle of Chancellorsville in April 30-May 6,1863, Battle of Gettysburg in July 1-3, 1863 this battle pushed the union ahead,Battle of the Wilderness in May 5, 1864, Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse in May 8-21, 1864, Battle of Deep Bottom in August 13-20,1864, and Battle of Appomattox Court House in April 9, 1865. (Thought Co.) Robert and his army won a good amount of battles.
Lee was against succession and was a proud U.S. Army Commander. He had been the Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy and was a very successful Army Officer. He loved the U.S. and the Army. “The South, in my opinion, has been aggrieved by the acts of the North, as you say. I feel the aggression, and am willing to take every proper step for redress.
Robert E. Lee’s (1807-1870) contribution to the United States as a war general and commander received positive connotations for his commitment, attitude and inspiration on the battlefield. However, it is debateable about his contributions because of Robert Lee’s association in the Civil War (1861-1865) to the Confederate Army that fought for the Southern States. Robert Lee lead many successful campaigns and battles including the following; helping defeat Mexican armies that lead to U.S land gains and westward expansion, battles against a more powerful army in the Civil War. Despite these achievements Lee’s loyalty for the Confederate Army that fought to uphold slavery undermines his success and is highly debateable about whether his contribution is justified or not. Robert Lee’s contributions to his nation begin before the Civil War in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
Before this Lee was making all the Union Generals look terrible and then the Union finally got a win. This changed the whole war because then the Union started winning more battles and they would add up and eventually lead to them winning the war. There was no chance of the Union winning the war until this
What led to this battle, was General Robert. E. Lee, was leading his army to Pennsylvania, to try to gain a food advantage over the North. Unbeknownst to both sides, this would be the first battle in the North. Lee had hoped that with a northern victory, external countries would view the south as an organized country, and not a group of “rag tag bandits”, as some northerner’s called the south. He also hoped that a northern victory would finally make the Union allow the South to become its own country.
