Rocket Propulsion Report Solid propellant processing Issues and challenges By Aayush Saxena (13AE30024) Introduction When we think of rockets, an image pops up in our mind of a large rocket soaring up producing tremendous amount of thrust as well as smoke. The image above shows the launch of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV-III) firing up its first stage solid boosters. Now the thing that produces this enormous amount of thrust that drives the rocket up is the propellant. A propellant is basically a chemical substance that produces this enormous amount of gas, which is ejected at high pressure from a specially designed nozzle to get the required amount of thrust. Two basic ways of producing gas is by either …show more content…
These components can act on their own as fuels. Double base propellants are also known as homogeneous propellants. Most commonly used double base propellant is composed of Nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose. Generally one of the component is a high energy fuel but is unstable on its own so it needs a second component which acts as a stabilizing agent as well as an auxiliary fuel. In case of Nitroglycerine, it contains enough oxygen for complete oxidation, but it is highly unstable so it is mixed mixed nitrocellulose to form a stable propellant and hence the name double base propellant. Double base propellants are used in anti tank weapons and battlefield missiles. They produce specific impulse of about 235 sec which can be further improved to about 250 sec with the addition of metal …show more content…
Nitroglycerine is so sensitive that it may explode even with a shock. The composition of the Nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose is not fixed, but the nitroglycerine is majorly in greater quantities in most of the propellants. Composition of nitroglycerine can vary from about 70% to as high as 93% rest being the nitrocellulose. There are a wide variety of explosives and propellants that uses nitroglycerine as a major fuel, some of them are dynamite, RDX, TNT etc. Each of them mixes nitroglycerine with some neural compound or some other fuel to stabilize it. Decomposition reaction of nitroglycerine is shown below. Above image shows nitrocellulose, although it is an explosive but it has a wide variety of applications. It is a polymer, it is used in making plastics. It is also called as guncotton. It is used in table tennis balls and in other smokeless explosives. Composite
Marsha McMillen Unit 4 Pharmacology Assignment The reasons the nitroglycerin did not work, is because Mr. Smith had consumed four whisky drinks with his dinner. He took the nitro pills one hour ago and then ten minutes before calling 911. He should have taken his pill every 5 minutes, but not to exceed more than 3 pills. When taking Nitroglycerin you should not take it after consuming alcohol, and you should follow the instruction as to how to take them. His ECG was not showing like a myocardial infarction. As the paramedic I would think that the chest pain was caused by indigestion.
The Octane rating refers to the amount of compression that the fuel can undergo before a combustion reaction occurs. Furthermore, the reason behind the use of isooctane instead of normal octane, is that the activation energy required for combustion is higher with isooctane due the more stable shape, translating to
Have you ever wondered what happens when a gun fires? I have been hunting for almost all my life and I have started to wonder about this. For my science fair project I 'm going to find the reaction of explosions. I also find this interesting because I want to make guns someday. I believe that understanding the Chemistry and Physics of explosions may help me to find the answer to my question.
Determining the Identity of an Unknown White Compound Maxwell Yurs Group Member: E.B. Floersch, Alexander Medina, and Masih Horri College Science and Engineering University of Minnesota, Minneapolis October 12, 2014 The experiments that were completed were used to determine the identity of an unknown white compound to allow for proper disposal. These experiments included flame tests, pH tests, and conductivity tests. After each was completed, it was found that the identity of the white compound was Sodium Nitrate.
The night crew was Caleb Waters,Luke Will,Chuck Baker, and Brian Roberts of Engine 9. The day shift crew was Buck Rogers,Chad Harris,Lewis Clark and Ben Hampton of Engine 9. The night shift crew was bet from running calls all night and at five minutes before shift change and they decided not sleep because they knew as soon as they tried to sleep the alarm would sound again.
Gunpowder is made up of saltpeter- a common name for the oxidizing agent potassium nitrate- sulfur and charcoal (Heather Whipps, 2008). When the Chinese scientists first mixed the ingredients together it resulted in smoke and flames, causing their hands and faces to burn (Heather Whipps, 2008). One of the first
These munitions combined with modernized technologies and training provides accurate and precise, lethal and nonlethal effects on targets. Being used in any terrain with the varying types, from self-propelled tracked howitzers, towed pieces, and even air dropping or air lifted to any position to emplace and range
The most common helpful usage is in the automotive industry the octane levels are too high to be consumed, but enough to reduce heat and produce combustion inside an engine in a
Acetone may melt the ice cube quickly because it is commonly used as a solvent. A solvent is a substance that has the ability to dissolve other substances. Acetone is also commonly used as an antiseptic, and is toxic in large quantities. Acetone naturally occurs in plants, and has a chemical formula of C3H6O. Acetone has many other names, such as 2-propanone, propanone, Dimethyl ketone, methyl ketone and, dimethyl formaldehyde and can also be found in vehicle exhaust. Acetone is a clear, flammable, volatile liquid that is used to make drugs, plastics and different fibers.
Pop Rocks and soda have a very interesting chemical reaction with each other. Soda is a very pressurized drink that has carbon dioxide in it. Carbon dioxide is a pressurized chemical. When it is shaken, it fizzes, and causes pressure, and overflows releasing the carbon dioxide. It is similar to the Pop Rocks.
Over decades, there are many cars that have left a lasting impression on past generations and our world today. One that has recently caught my attention is an all time favorite, the American Sport’s Car, the Corvette. From the very beginning, it has been a natural instinct for young men to dream and covet exhilirating cars. However, at one point in history, where Corvette styling and demand would go in the future was unclear, yet today in 2015, seven generations of Corvettes have evolved, manufactured, bought and raced.
The low mass weight can be in many different shapes and densities. It is placed more in the center of the bowling ball. This would be the kind in the Reactive Resin and the Particle Proactive because they tend to have a big curve or
The decomposition of NaHCO3 is an example of Prevention within Green Chemistry principles because all solid waste in this experiment is collected and used again. The only gaseous wastes generated by the reaction in the experiment are carbon dioxide and water, which are benign (Lab 3). The decomposition reaction of NaHCO3, generates virtually no waste, therefore less hazardous chemical syntheses. The byproducts of the reaction are gaseous CO2 and H2O which possess little or no toxicity to human health and the environment, because of the amounts released in this experiment. (Lab 3).
The kerosene oil and fuel oil portion is fundamentally unaltered and utilized as fuel for the trucking and development industry. This portion can likewise be prepared into a forte's portion solvents utilized as a part of assembling
Joel Day ESS 102 Research Paper Rough Draft #1 Propellantless Spaceflight Heavy fuel payloads have always been an unwanted stow-away on all spaceflights. Whether it’s the 4.4 million pounds of fuel for the Space Shuttle or the few hundred pounds of Hydrazine on Voyager, propellant has always been a concern. In the Sci-Fi story I’ve chosen to write, microwave propulsion in the form of the EmDrive has been perfected and expanded on. Humans have established colonies on Mars and have outposts across the planet and the year is no 2526.
