A Rock of Undeniable Courage From field to field this hometown hero must be considered as one of the most courageous people in US history. Many people have great qualities that make them famous or well-known, but not many people have true courage. Bethany Hamilton states, “Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you.” Without a doubt, Rocky Bleier, former Pittsburgh Steeler football player, is an exemplary example of the word courageous. Bleier was born on March 5, 1946 in Appleton, Wisconsin, and was the oldest of four children. Born Robert Patrick Bleier he was given his nickname by his father who thought he looked like a “Rock” sitting in his crib, the name stuck, and the US would know him as Rocky. Bleier was a determined athlete who not only excelled on the football field but fought in the fields during the Vietnam War. With a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and 4 Super Bowl rings, Bleier is a shoe in for this honorary US History recognition. Indeed, courageous is his middle name. Rocky …show more content…

After all, his story has touched people all over America and beyond. Rocky’s life was anything but a bed of roses, but he took what he was given and kept on living the dream. Furthermore, his real-life story of the powers of faith and belief in yourself makes just about anything possible. Rocky continues to inspire the young and old alike with his inspirational talks, motivational speeches, and books. For example, his book, Fighting Back: The Rocky Bleier Story, is a must read to fully understand the pain and hardships that Rocky endured during and after the war and how he overcame all the adversity. With this is mind, Rocky used his struggles to inspire other people who may not struggle in the same way but have their own struggles to overcome them and achieve their goals.
