Is Rodeo Cruel Towards Animals? Organizations like PETA have been trying to get rodeo events banned because they think rodeos are cruel towards animals because of the rough nature of the sport. Those of us who have grown up in the ranching and rodeo industry know that the animals involved in rodeo are extremely healthy and are taken care of better than a lot of other animals, because the rodeo animals have to be in peak performance. If the animals are injured or unhealthy they won 't be able to make money for the rodeos and the rodeo contestants. We believe that rodeo should continue because it is a sport of tradition and teaches people about how life was in the old west and in some cases how cowboying is in modern time. Rodeo is also the …show more content…
“animal-rights groups say that many events, like calf roping, are fundamentally cruel.” (“Is the Rodeo Ring too Cruel”). What this quote is saying is that animal rights groups are against rodeo because of the harshness of the events like calf roping.Calf roping involves a calf running out of a chute then is chased by a horse and rider that tries to rope the calf by the head then jumps off the horse and flips the calf and then hogties the animal, which can scare the calf and hurt the calf if the rider is not careful. Animals rights groups also are against the tools used in rodeos like flank straps. They feel that the flank strap that goes around the horse or bull 's body from the abdomen to the animals back is painfully tightened in order to make the bull and/or horse buck harder and drive their unnatural behavior to give the rider a better score for the ride. “to get rodeo bulls to buck riders, painful straps are tied around their abdomens to drive the animals to unnatural behavior, according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.” (is the rodeo ring too cruel). Their is some truth to why animals rights groups feel this way because rodeo is a rough physical sport and if the riders and stock contractors don’t take the right precautions then an animal, contestant, or audience member can get …show more content…
There is a wide range of tools used in rodeos, but I’m only going to mention the most controversial. One tool that is highly debated in the rodeo and livestock business is called the cattle prod a.k.a the hot shot. The hot shot is a hand held tool that comes in many sizes like pocket sized ones to 5 foot long. The hot shots are battery powered and are used to move cattle. How it does that is by having a small amount of electricity pass through the tool and onto the animal. The amount of electricity is so small of an amount that it doesn’t hurt the animal it only alerts them. Like many tools if it is misused then it can be harmful to the animal, just like in the working industries. If they misuse a tool it can harm or kill another person. “An important tool in a livestock operation is the cattle prod. Since large, untrained animals do not reliably respond to voice or hand signals, an effective device is needed for the safety of both people and animals.”(Burdick). Another tools that is highly used in the rodeo and livestock industry is spurs. Spurs are worn on the back of the cowboy/cowgirl’s boot and is then used to roll on the horse’s side where the stirrups are. The spur helps guide and tell the horse what the rider wants it to do. The spurs just like the cattle prod are not used to hurt the animal but can cause damage if they are misused. “Spurs used by bareback and
However because of the horses scared nature and the untrained slaughter workers, most aims do not go as directed. This leaves the horse with many painful blows and injuries to the head and body. Another method that is mostly used in Mexico uses a small knife which is repeatedly stabbed in the horse's spine which causes paralysis and eventually suffocation. After attempting to kill or sometimes successfully killing the horse, the animal is hung by one leg, the throat is slit open for the horse to bleed out, and then the horse is
Wild horse roundups became more frequent as the population of wild horses began to increase. The methods used for roundups included, “Using low flying planes and mounted armed cowboys, commercial contractors rounded up horses and reduced their numbers on the range” (Aksentijevich). Many times planes and helicopters fly low and while men on four-wheelers chase and spook the wild horses and separate them into groups, “The process includes chasing down entire herds with a helicopter, trapping them and separating the horses based on gender and age instead of by family units” (Boetel). This process takes the families of horses away from each other. Once they are separated, the horses are then put into corrals, feedlots, and other holding facilities,
Seabiscuit, An American Legend, is a book about the racehorse, Seabiscuit, who stole several American’s hearts as he made his journey through the horse racing world. Throughout the book, the bond of trust between the horse, trainer, and jockey grows into a greater appreciation and respect for one another. Red, Seabiscuit’s primary jockey, faced several vigorous trials that take place in the racing-world. Nevertheless he never gave up his dream, which was to ride race horses. Seabiscuit traveled all over the country to compete in races, which can be a ridiculously huge strain especially on animals.
These riders are the ones that couldn’t care less about their horse. These are the people that leave their horse tied to the fence so that somebody will come and take care of it. They are usually gone before somebody notices their horse. This is almost abuse. If the care less riders end up having to actually take care of their horse, then they usually put them out in the pasture without checking to make sure they have water, feed, etc.
This is necessary because if you look down you will lose track of where you are going and where the steer is at. After these skills are learned, it is time to rope off your horse. The first thing you should rope should be a dummy sled. A dummy sled is a fake steer that is pulled by a four-wheeler.
In Fort Worth, an event in which a herd of cattle is driven down the street is held twice daily to show the cowboy history of the city. Cowboys and cattle drives were inspired by the Spanish and helped spark a cattle boom in Texas in the 19th century. People in the North Central Plains are proud of their cowboy history, another different cultural quality of
Equestrian sports have been entertaining humans for centuries. Many of these sports have turned fun entertainment into a business. The focus has changed from having fun to making as much money as possible. In every equestrian sport, questionable things are done to train and get horses to their “best” potential. Equestrian sports should have stricter regulations and enforcement in order to ensure and maintain the safety of the horse.
Animals once worshipped like gods are now abused and used for entertainment. The circus and SeaWorld, two places common for entertaining children, display their animals in grand shows, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg of the truth. Hidden, are the cruel practices, immoral punishments, and unhealthy psychological effects that most of the animals experience. There is a reason why animal rights activists protested. There is a reason why Sea World is ending its world famous Orca whale shows.
I grew up in a rodeo family, my parents did it, my grandparents did it, even my great grandparents did it. I have been on a horse, well, since before I was born. I have had a rope in my hand since I knew how to walk. I even won my first buckle when I was three, my first saddle when I was five, and won a trailer when I was eight. I was the best around.
Rodeos are big events all over the country. Families come from all over to enjoy watching cowboys compete at the rodeos. While some people come to rodeos to document the abuse and harm that the cowboys are causing the animals. It is a big controversy whether rodeos are animal abuse or not. Animal rights activists are trying to stop rodeos from “abusing” animals, but they don’t know the extensive care that the animals are given.
So many organizations have tried bringing rodeos to a hault. Because they say it is a form of animal abuse. There is a organization (SHARK) which stands for showing animals respect and kindness. One other organization is called (PETA) ethical to animals. Both of these organizations have claimed that in no other sport are half the contestants forced to preform with flank straps, electric prods, raking
Some say that rodeo is a cruel sport. For example, source C, “What’s Wrong with the Rodeo?” says, “Rodeo performers have been documented beating, kicking, and shocking normally docile cows and horses in chutes and holding pens,” (Source C). This person is incorrect because rodeo performers do not harm their horses or the livestock in any way. In barrel
Many people are against these horses being forced to participate in activities that threaten their well-being. Along with concerns for the horses’ health, gambling is another popular issue people have with horse racing. It is a common practice for those attending
It’s cruel and inhumane, which is why it has to end right now. If you disagree, you have to ask yourself: “Why not? Why don’t you want to end their suffering? How can you sit there and watch such cruelty?” Making animals test subjects are wrong, no matter what’s its purpose.
Protesters stand outside of testing sites with signs while chanting to let the animals go. The animals a forced to barren cages and are malnourished. In most cases the animal handlers abuse them when they snap back at all the needles and restraints being forced on
