Education is a loan that we hold and teaching is one way to pay it back. As members of scientific fraternity we need to be effective in paying back this loan. Medical education is inclined towards integration of subjects thus we now have longitudinal and spiral themes. Educationists are trying their maximum to make medical education more and more mathematical and objective. In this quest we are missing to integrate role modelling as part of education. In past Students were considered ends and not means to achieve the target of this prestigious job. Nowadays teaching is meant to earn money, it’s a business, quite a contrary to what it was in past. Oxford dictionary describes Mentors as "An experienced and trusted adviser" and role model as " A person looked to by others as an example to be imitated". These definitions well explain the concept of role models. It is also evident that Role modelling is not a discrete episode in which students observe rather a continuous state of doing the right thing so students can learn and imitate them. To become a role model you also do not need to be an experienced, senior or trusted person but just need to execute right things in right fashion so students can learn from. Many times learning is an unconscious phenomenon thus teachers need to be conscious of this, as teachers in state of automaticity may do unprofessional things and students do not miss any chance to pick them. Teachers ought to be as role models as they provide students an opportunity to see their future in themselves and this gives a motivation to work …show more content…
, This shows that role modelling not only creates learning environment of the very moment but also directs students for future. Hidden curriculum is in fact more significant in education as it intends to create an environment of professionalism, essential of being a doctor. Role models not only help students in choosing the right way of becoming a professional physician but they also provide an opportunity to choose their future career. GMC has also illustrated attributes of a good teacher who is involved in clinical teaching, it mentions that he should have "An enthusiasm for his/her specialty". Enthusiasm will provide the spark that students will see and inspire.
We need to revisit our scheme of medical education as the product that we want does not matches with what we are teaching them. A teacher in order to be effective role model should never forget his role, even when he is not actively teaching. Teachers should also encourage dialogue with students as this will address misconception of students. There is dire need to increase human contact-a free time in the absence of gadgets that can flourish attributes of a good scholar, student and of a
Have you ever had some you looked up to? Someone that inspired you to do things? Well, that person would be considered your role model. A role model is a person that is looked up to by others. A specific example of this is in Nazario’s
It has been argued that the shift towards patient-conscious medical aid is necessary and that simulation in its widest sense can be used to support this process. However, sensitivity to what we are simulating is essential, especially when simulations purport to address patient perspectives. The essay first reviews the history of medical education "centeredness," then outlines ways in which real and simulated patients are currently involved in medical education. Patient-focused simulation is described as a means of offering patients' perspectives during the acquisition of clinical procedural and surgical skills. The authors draw on their experiences of developing Patient-focused simulation and preliminary work to "authenticate" simulations from patient perspectives.
A role model possesses qualities that inspire people in life. People emulate that person characteristics and behavior in order to be successful. Role models help people through their life without being influenced by obstacles in order to achieve greatness by using their life experiences to guide them. Radio Raheem is not a role model because he is stubborn and disrespectful. Radio Raheem is not a role model because he is stubborn.
Among the various skills that I possess, I believe that my passion for serving others will most profoundly impact my shadowing program experience. As a physician, it is one’s foremost duty to care for the needs of others, doing no harm in the process. I firmly believe that the sole way to complete the lengthy journey to becoming a physician is to possess both a strong work ethic and a strong desire for serving others. My parents divorced when I was six years old. Even at such a young age, I remember members of our church filing into our house night after night with meals.

In his piece, “The Learning Curve,” Dr. Gwande explores the importance of practicing in order to learn a task. He also highlights the moral problem that accompanies practicing on patients. Through his experiences while training to become a surgeon and learning how to put a central line into a patient, Dr. Gwande highlights the importance of practice in medicine. He says,” We need practice to get good at what we do.”
A role model is a person looked to by others as an example to be imitated, for me that is Esther. I will soon be becoming a Bat Mitzvah and when I enter adulthood I inspire to be like Esther. For hundreds of years Esther’s has been seen as a heroine, but
According to Cross (2009), learning takes place not only within the formal environment, but it also happens in an informal environment such as the clinical environment of a hospital; as such the physical context of the clinical area is not primarily designed for the purpose of learning. In fact, a hospital ward has been constructed and organized to manage the sick; however, teaching and learning can occur within the ward environment, even though this in not its primary function. As a result, teaching in this environment requires adaptation and the ability to work with what is available rather than trying to produce the ideal environment. Additionally, Cross (2009), state that the primary function of teaching and learning in an informal environment position the teacher to be able to direct, enhance and sustain learning through the use of illustration. However, Sankaranarayanan and Sindhu (2012) state
According to Dr. Price-Mitchell's article "What is a Role Model?" a role model is how young people develop their skills, abilities, and motivation to become citizen. Dr. Price-Mitchell's identifies several qualities
My first comprehensive exposure to the health care field was six years ago as a senior, during which time I participated in hospital-based schooling. This program allowed me to observe a multitude of different medical disciplines, with rotations in surgery, orthopedics, nutrition, dermatology, gastroenterology, neurology, administrative services, and many more. Three out of the five school days were dedicated solely to shadowing, and the other two were spent in the classroom learning various medical-centric studies. Once in college, I continued to shadow physicians whenever my class scheduled permitted. I participated in the 4-U Mentorship program, which paired me with a fourth-year medical student who was preparing to do his residency in general
Moreover, the student's ability to score high on the post-quiz and to pass their clinical, medical, surgical competency skill examination is indicative of the knowledge of my teaching strategy and
Not only children learn from teachers, teachers also need to learn from children. A successful teacher is willing to learn. Teachers know that they are encouraged to learn for lifetime and not just for a short time as teacher is a life-long learner. Teacher not only gives knowledge to children and also gains knowledge when they
I learned that besides clinical skills , building a good rapport with the patients was essential. Because, other than the knowledge of medicine, patients looked up to their physicians for empathy and support. This quality helped me develop a strong relationship with my patients through out my medical career. With limited resources in Pakistan I had to rely greatly on my own clinical expertise rather than expensive laboratory and radiological tests. And this has polished my clinical skills as a physician.
Investing my time in the care of my patient gives the opportunity to not only assist them in a difficult situation, but also to learn more about their diagnosis and the treatment, while comparing it to what we have learned in class. For example, I had a patient that suffered from Sickle Cell Disease and came to the ER during a crisis. Correlating this case to the books and the content learned in class, these patients receive at least 1000 mL of fluids, pain medication, and oxygen. Additionally, I had a patient with meningitis. This individual presented with common symptoms such as nuchal rigidity, muscle pain, fever, and chills.
Being a teacher is a journey that has much to do with learning about yourself and being aware that what happens in your classroom reflects only on how are you with yourself. Teachers are not conscious that they project into students, and that affects how things go in the classroom. I believe the first characteristic of a good teacher is that he/ she is always willing to analyze his/her teaching performance. Second the teacher is humble enough to receive input about the development and application of techniques, learning from it and improving.
