EXAM INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH Today, we live in a world with easy access to information. Whether it is the latest news, or if we want to find out the weather of tomorrow. Because we live in a globalized world, the English language media has had a huge impact on our daily lives, which affect us more than we think. The question I’ll discuss is therefore; which role does the English language media play in the international society, and what are the effects of this media becoming more and more important? Ever since the digital revolution, which began in the late 1950s, a common lingua franca has played a decisive role for international communication and in our multicultural society. But why is it English? Well the technologies were first invented and spread in the Anglo-American world, and besides, English language dominated communication between countries long before we even got the internet. According to Access, North America, which includes large countries like the US and Canada, only constitutes 13% of the internet users in the world. Even though it can be wrong to put the responsibility of today’s expectations on how you should look on only one language, the magazines in English are central in developing an international standard. These magazines have the choice to not publish pictures of thin models and to not photoshop images. English is an important language in the fashion industry, and the magazines written in English have a big audience. They help communicating images which can hurt their readers’ self-image. Additionally, TV-shows in English and films from Hollywood also contribute to this “perfect” body image.
