The evolving strides in the practice of clinical dentistry coupled with current economic realities obtained in various regions of the world cannot be disconnected from the birth and growth of entrepreneurship in delivery of dental care. A dentist, known in the US as a dental surgeon, is a surgeon who specializes in dentistry-the diagnosis, prevention, treatment of diseases and conditions of the oral cavity. While an entrepreneur can be defined in many ways, one general definition who be a person who believes that he or she has a unique idea, then starts a company and brings it to a customer base. Although dentists may have an entrepreneurial spirit, they are not true entrepreneurs. Simply by selecting dentistry as a profession, dentists have engaged in a business that has a high level of success and limited growth potential, I do not mean to imply that practices cannot be successful and create excellent lifestyles for dentists As stated above, they will be limited in growth by the physical capacity of the dentist, the team and the facilities. There is a great deal of security in dental practice if basic management principles are followed and business systems are put in place. Dentists are open to widen exposure and often have unique business opportunities. Sometime, they are the innovators of unique products which have the scope of mass manufacturing and converting it into a good production industry. For example one can develop a unique design for a universal implant hand piece that can fit in a dental chair and be easily used to fit implant from any brand. This can out to be a game changer in the dental material and products industry and the innovator must know that he has to get the design patented for his own benefit at the first place. Entrepreneurship is suited for dentists who are patient, take risks in terms of investments and returns, not deterred by failure and have voluntarily chosen such a path as his/her profession. Dental graduates have some advantage when it comes to starting own venture. Broadly we can say that there are various breeds of entrepreneur that can be called BOSI i.e. Builder, Opportunist, Specialist and Innovator. An Entrepreneur be can made of one or combination of more than one of these traits. These traits have been given different weights.
