While it can be argued that the media may pose to have a bad or harmful, or even good impact on society, the media today is most definitely quite influential on individual people as well as on society as a whole. So, what role does the mass media play on society? - Legislatures, media executives, local school officials and sociologists have all debated this controversial question. While opinions vary as to the extent and type of influence the mass media wields, all sides agree that mass media is a permanent part of today’s modern culture, be it positive or negative.
“All of us who professionally use the mass media are the shapers of society. We can vulgarise that society. We can brutalise it…”- The media has a huge impact on society in shaping the public opinion of the masses. They can form or modify the public opinion in different ways depending on what is the objective of the person/people in-charge of the specific form of mass media (magazines, videos, television etc.). For example, between the 1900’s and early 2000’s, Pakistani media influenced the public opinion against the Taliban in the American S.W.A.T, by a repeated telecast of a video clip showing the whipping of a woman by a Taliban militant. Before the video went viral, the public opinion over the military action against the Taliban in SWAT was divided, but due to the repeated telecast of this short video clip, the Pakistani and American government achieved their objective as to having the power over the public’s
