Roles of kingship in Ancient Sumerian Society? The epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest written story on Earth. It is about Ancient Sumerians, written in cuneiform script and it is also about the king of Uruk (Gilgamesh) somewhere between 2700 to 2500 BCE. There are different stories about the king and his responsibilities. Many people think that Gilgamesh was not the leader he should be and he did not treat his people fairly. Some of his responsibilities were to protect and provide for his people. According to the history, Gilgamesh was two-thirds god and one-third human.
