Romanticism demonstrated a new vision of artists and writers. Fascinating new principles were used in these works, making the pieces more modern, intriguing, and ambiguous. The Romantic characteristics: Interest in the Common Man, Celebration of the Individual, Strong Feelings, Senses and Emotions, Awe of Nature, the Supernatural Realm, and Importance of Imagination, are open to different perceptions by everyone. Nathaniel Hawthorne utilized a variety of these characteristics in his short story, “Young Goodman Brown.” He emphasized Interest in the Common Man, Awe of Nature, and the Supernatural Realm. The “haunted forest” (Hawthorne 39), in which Goodman Brown was in, emitted fear and was frightening to Goodman Brown. When he made the decision to venture into the meeting of the devil worshippers, the Supernatural Realm expanded itself into various forms. It continues with the ideas of the spooky forest and the witches, but it added new features, as well. “And there they stood, the only pair, as it seemed, who were yet hesitating on the verge of wickedness in this dark world. A basin was hollowed, naturally, in the rock. Did it contain water, reddened by the lurid light? or was it blood? or, perchance, a liquid flamer” (Hawthorne 42-43)? The ambiguity of the substance in the basin was supernatural because it adds to the frightening element of scare. Although it be mere water lit up, the audience is led to believe it is blood. Nathaniel Hawthorne leaves it to our own opinion to believe if Goodman Brown was dreaming or awake. In the beginning of the story it’s believed they saw Goodman Brown was awake before going into the forest. Then when he going into the forest, Goodman Brown had fallen asleep. So, the story has us believe that his worst fears came to reality. In the end it leaves us to question in what we thought from the beginning.
Night and darkness are both heavily involved in the overall mood of the atmosphere in “Young Goodman Brown.” The farther away he gets from his faith and the closer he gets to the ceremony the darker the surroundings get. Then once at the location of the ceremony there are pine trees surrounding the altar. Pine trees are dark green and provide shade from even the moonlight. Around the altar is the darkest and most evil spot in the whole forest and story.
The short story “The Devil and Tom Walker”, written by Washington Irving, has many examples of Romanticism throughout. “The Devil and Tom Walker” is about a man named Tom Walker and how he stumbled across a old Indian fortress in the woods. As Tom is walking through, he kicks an old skull and the Devil come out. The Devil offers him the Indians buried treasure in exchange for his soul. Tom declines the offer and goes back home to his wife to tell her about the offer.
A coming of age story is when the main character loses their innocence and makes a transition to adulthood. Young Goodman Brown is not an coming of age story but it still one where innocence is lost. Through the short text, Brown evolves from a young virtuous man to one full of spite. Even though he once was a pure young man, due to the epiphany within the forest Brown loses faith within his heritage and realizes he cannot trust the village.
For example; Young Goodman Brown represents every man, or how Pink ribbons represent the mixture of purity and evil. But the three words that will be explained throughout this paper will show how they put the story together. One of the more obvious symbols seen, the forest, is also one of the most used. The forest provides the setting for most of the story and the meaning of temptation.
