Ancient Greece has had a great impact on the society we live in today. A multitude of things seen every day can be traced back to Ancient Greece. Artistic styles and literature in Ancient Greece are the foundation of artistic styles and literature in Western Societies. Additionally, gods worshiped in Greece represented different traits and personalities which further contributed to the idea of individualism—a core idea in Western Societies such as America today. Political and educational systems in Greece are also similar to Western Societies.
How did you think religion was like back then for the Romans and the Greeks? Religion is an important part of their culture. Throughout history it has influenced almost every other aspect of life including wars, marriages, sporting and entertainment events, as well as daily life and activities. There is no denying that it is important. Religion in ancient times was no different than modern day.
The Ancient Greek, Persian, and Roman empires each influenced each other's way of life through a myriad conflicts and innovations. Each empire underwent cultural innovation through artistic expression. Each three empires had their own unique governmental structures, and expanded their empires. Lastly, internal conflicts among within the Roman, and Sassanian Empires coerced both empires to shift to monotheism. Ultimately, each empire fate was predicated upon its relations with one another.
Roman culture began to expand around 117 CE and by 285 CE the empire had spread and become the principal government of Rome. The city of Rome was the center, the civilization of Rome was ruled much by Europe and lasted for nearly a thousand years. The birth of the Roman empire continued and brought major stability to the regions of the Mediterranean. The empire also stretched across most of Europe, Armenia, North Africa, and Assyria. Rome ultimately became the place for religious, political and social institutions.
Native Americans ideas of equality and liberty seemed to influence many of the European philosophers, and later some of the inclusions into the Bill of Rights . These Native Americans ideals of equality and liberty were the foundation of the then-radical ideas that the United States is built on
Greek influence is evident in modern day art, music, philosophy, religion, and many other aspects. As astounding as it may seem that traces of an ancient culture can last thousands of years, it is due to the rise and development of the Greeks and the conflicts that continued to develop and refine the civilization. In the democracy of our government and the paintings that hang in museums, Greek influence is a major part of modern culture. For example, the Greeks developed a form of democracy, which influenced the form of the American Government. Greeks influenced Modern education as well, not only were forms of math such as geometry and algebra developed, philosophical ideals about religion, consciousness, and nature were suggested.
The religion was able to both affect them positive and negative. One positive effect of Roman mythology is that it gave people a purpose to live. Roman mythology like many other religions gave its people a reason to live and help others. During the time of Roman mythology the people of Rome were much more advanced than any other countries around them. Roman mythology also gave the Romans the belief that they had divine roots.
The political institutions of the Byzantine Empire, and Western Europe had many similarities, as well as a number of differences. Western Europe prior to the fall the Byzantine Empire had a similar political system; however, as time transpired, Western Europe began to develop different political structures such as manorialism and feudalism. The Byzantine Empire, having remarkable similarities to China’s political systems, was deeply rooted in an one of history’s most elaborate bureaucracies. Both were eventually affected by the schism of 1054 between the East and the West, and conflicts between both sides had an influence on the political structures of both Western Europe, and the Byzantine Empire. Byzantine political patterns resembled the earlier Chinese system.
It was an experience of becoming part of the tradition. I learned about stories of old and the history of it all, as well as the modern culture of communities such as Oia and the monasteries that were part of this project. I hope that, through this, you have come to recognize everything that I have found in the same wonder as I. I have learned also about how the Western world was influenced by this. Our myths that we tell children for entertainment or lessons and government are very good examples. Not only the Aegean Sea culture but all of Greece up until Roman occupation was part of this influence.
Alexander the Great had a big impact on spreading the Hellenistic culture because he spread literature, art, warfare techniques, and so much more. A few examples on how he spread the Hellenistic culture to the western area is, the library of Alexandria. The writing of the Greeks were spread, which are still used today. He spread most of these by conquering the other areas, naming most of them Alexandria, and when the Greeks moved there, the culture would spread from that city to another city around that area causing the Greek culture to spread everywhere in the western areas that Alexander the Great
