Comparison of love in Romeo and Juliet vs. in Wuthering Heights
Introduction
Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights and William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” are regarded as the two most popular and powerful romances found in English literature. In the two books, the setting is used to reflect the mood of the different scenes stimulating the imaginations of the audiences. One thing that is common in both of the plays is the theme of love. The two stories are similar with two characters involved in love that brings drama to the families. In both stories, the main characters face huge obstacles in the pursuit of their love making their being together difficult. In Wuthering Heights, the two characters in love are Catherine and Heathcliff, and the two in Romeo and Juliet go by the names used in the title. This essay explores the theme of love as is seen in “Romeo and Juliet” and in “Wuthering Heights."

Another similarity is the tragic ending of both stories. Romeo is cast out of the town because he had murdered Juliet 's cousin in a street brawl that was instigated by the Capulet family. Juliet takes a sleep potion and sends a message to Romeo to get her. However, Romeo does not get the message in time and believes that she had really died. He takes poison thus killing himself. When Juliet woke up, she got the tragic news that Romeo had died and she also committed suicide. In the case of "Wuthering Heights," the two lovers do not end up together. Heathcliff goes in search of work and wealth, and Catherine married another man. Heathcliff returns a rich man but finds Catherine already taken. Catherine then falls very ill and dies. Heathcliff wills himself to die. However, he does not commit suicide as was the case in Romeo and
