The dancers more than rose to the occasion. And the audiences' enthusiastic responses indicated that company loyalty among ballet-goers is still strong. Earlier in the season I saw a performance of Peter Martins' Romeo + Juliet that had a lovely, lyrical Juliet in Sterling Hyltin, an appealingly ardent Romeo in Harrison Coll (making his debut), and some virtuosos in the roles of Mercutio (Daniel Ulbricht), Tybalt (Joaquin de Luz), and Benvolio (Joseph Gordon). But Martins' version of this warhorse still fails to sing. Martins' version is best in the fight scenes, where the violence escalates in a very organic, tense
The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a book filled with romance, drama, and action, a true classic from the Elizabethan era. In the streets of Verona, an ancient feud is reborn between the Capulets and Montagues. After coming to Capulet’s party uninvited, Romeo, the only son of Montague instantly forgets Rosaline, his previous love interest, as he sets eyes on the beautiful Juliet, the only daughter of the Capulets. The two secretly get married the next day, with the help of Friar Lawrence and Juliet's nurse. Many tragic events follow, which bring sadness, banishment, and finally, the death of six characters which sadly include our star crossed lovers.
There is a myriad of themes and enthralling characters in the play “Romeo and Juliet” written by William Shakespeare in the late 16th century. In my opinion, Mercutio, a kinsman of the Prince and the best friend of the young Petrarchan lover Romeo, is the most interesting as he is such a vivid and complex character. Mercutio brings colour, life, and humor to the play with his vulgar puns and jokes. He is very loquacious, erratic, always ready to guard his family and friend's honor and anti-romantic (just like the Nurse, he treats love only as a sexual attraction), which contrasts with peaceful, quiet and romantic Romeo, making Mercutio his antithesis. The audience sees his salience as he tries to save Romeo from melancholy and his courtly
One of Romeo's main characteristics throughout the play is Romeo's love for Juliet. This loves leads to the main conflict of the play. On the other hand, Mercutio is often making fun of Romeo's romantic nature. This points out how extreme Romeo’s love is. Which can recontextualize the plot from traject lovers to obsessive love.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a play which explores oppositional ideas throughout the story. Mercutio is a minor character in the play. However, Mercutio plays a vital role in the play, he acts as a comedic foil to Romeo, his loyalty to Romeo brings him closer to the storyline and helps to set up the story. His death signifies a complete tonal shift towards tragedy from romance and his role, both regarding his characterisation and the significance of his death, serves to develop the opposing themes and genres within the play such as Love & Violence and Fate & Destiny. Mercutio’s character is used to develop the primary themes, such as the horrific consequences of mindlessly-preserving honour and reputation, shown through his meaningless death.
