One of the most famous love stories, Romeo and Juliet, set during the Elizabethan era, is the story of two star-crossed lovers and the great lengths that they go through to show their love for their each other. Throughout the Elizabethan era, in most cases, courtships were nonexistent; most individuals went immediately to marriage. Today, “couples usually spend some periods of time engaged before they actually marry” (Document A). Couples moving towards engagement establish a strong connection which is crucial to a relationship. Without a strong connection with someone, love may fizzle out, or there may even be a lack of love in the first place. Many times in the Elizabethan era, if any, a scarce amount of attraction occurred, let alone love. Imagine marrying someone undesirable and unfamiliar. Throughout Romeo and Juliet's time, no other choice presented itself and individuals would have to deal with an arranged marriage, especially younger women such as Juliet. Before marrying, Romeo and Juliet knew each other for less than a week, therefore, thus, they would most likely have trouble with intimacy because they did not have a ssignificant amount of knowledge about each other. When thinking of marriage, it is important to think of everything that marriage entails. "Marriage is the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies and the accompiniment of social festivities" (Document B). The average age for marriage in the modern world is 27 versus the age of 14 during the Elizabethan era when Juliet got married. At the age of 14, during this time, girls had no job and virtually no time to focus on themselves before rushing into marriage. Nowadays, before getting marrried, women have careers and can provide for themselves before settling down and marrying. In addition, at the age of 14, the brain's development lacks maturity because of its young age. Decisions made at 14, like Juliet marrying Romeo, do not always reflect what an individual may desire in the future such as who they decide to marry. The decision making at such young ages happened increasingly often in the Elizabethean era. However, legally in today's society, most legal decisions are not even made until the age of eighteen, which is four years older than Juliet. Things unacceptable in society during the 1500's have become more and more acceptable such as divorce. Throughout the Elizabethean era, people viewed divorce
They never let her decide on her own. Juliet was somber from her parents forcing an unwanted marriage upon her. Lord and Lady Capulet decided that their daughter Juliet should be married now that she is 14 years old. Juliet, however, does not agree with what her parents are wanting. They wish for her to be with Paris; a kinsmen of Prince Escalus.
Friar Lawrence had a strong two examples that affected the relationship between the lovers. For example, Friar Lawrence gave Juliet a potion that will fake her death but really she’s still alive she’s just got “No warmth, no breath” and that “shall testify thou livest”. (4.1.2464) When Friar Lawrence suggested that she should take this potion, in his little speech he mentions that she be close to dead to fool everyone. That even means Romeo in the most unfortunate times. When Friar Lawrence was speaking with Juliet he also planned to send letters to dear Romeo who had been staying in Mantua.
Women were known as second class citizens. Women who were single for some reason were known as “witches” by their peers. Single women relied on their male relatives to support them (Alchin). The main difference between Elizabethan weddings and modern day weddings is with modern day weddings one has the choice of selecting their own spouse.
Excerpts of the Diary of Elizabeth May 7th 1670 Love. A singular feeling I have when I look at him. My Mr. Hooper, I am ecstatic that I get to marry the love of my life, MY Reverend. When I am with him, I feel as if I am on top of a cloud floating above reality. It is a feeling unlike any other.
Back in time it was a matter of course to get married, people did it because of tradition and maybe because everyone else did it. It wasn 't as special as it is today, back then you were much better at compromising. Today most of us think it’s a big deal to get married and get committed in such way to another human being, because we know it’s can go the other way around too. Many people are having a divorce, and when we hear that, we don’t get as surprised as we should, because it happens all the time and we know that almost every marriage ends up in a divorce. We change all the time, and our generation is a lot different from the generations before.

In India they do arranged marriages and surprisingly the teens does not mind being set up for the marriages. The reason these teens don’t mind being set in arranged marriages is because they don’t have to worry about the struggle of a relationship. Many young teens in India look at marrying a person they don’t know gives them a lifetime to learn and love them. These marriages are not based on feelings, but commitment. In the text Sabatina was forced to go with the arranged marriage in which she didn’t want to do but since it was her family’s tradition she had to do it
A marriage based on love was very rare in the 1400’s, most marriages were based on wealth and power. Romeo and Juliet is a realistic interpretation of the 1400’s,showing why and how marriages were arranged, the disadvantages of an arranged marriage, and finally how it feels to have your marriage arranged. Since marriage wasn’t decided on love, the couples were usually brought upon many complications. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet’s will to not marry Paris was what brought her to the decision to “poison” herself. Essentially, Juliet’s arranged marriage with Paris is what ultimately led to the tragic suicides of both Romeo and Juliet.
And what makes this scenario even worse is that Lady Capulet was in a similar situation when she married Lord Capulet. From the knowledge given in the book, it is estimated that Lady Capulet had Juliet at age 14. Even the Lord mentions how marrying young can “marr” young women. He says, “And too soon marr 'd are those so early made.” (1.2.283)
There are some similarities, though. During Queen Elizabeth's time, women were regarded as property and not as actual human beings. This can be seen in the article, "Elizabeth's England" by the Utah Shakespeare Company. Marriage rarely had any regard for love, and was almost always used to gain power and relations between two groups and families.
Getting married is a most important thing with so many people. Marriage is a universal phenomenon. It does not constitute a commitment. It is having so many legal and financial benefits of marriage. Also, there's a psychological difference.
