This paper studies about the role of root morpheme in helping students to understand a meaning of a word. Morpheme is a grammatical function or the smallest units of language that have a meaning or parts of words. There are two types of morphemes in morphology which is bound and free morphemes. The respondent of the study were students from Melaka randomly choose from any school. The respondent are from different school in Melaka. The online survey was carry out face-to-face. This survey only specific to Malaysian Students with proficiency advanced in English Language. Only 5 respondents only response to this survey. However, even though English has already been taught to a child in their early stage of education, some of them still lacking in their proficiency of English Language. Some students find it is difficult to learn a new words or some words is difficult to learn. It is not because they are not good in English; it is because they did not know the tips of learning English Language in a simple way. Students may not realise that some complicated word is actually comes from the root morpheme which they already known or used in their daily interaction. The purpose of the study described in this research report was to investigate the role of morpheme in helping students in understanding a meaning of a word. The aim here is students from the secondary school with age range from thirteen to fifteen years old which is from form 1 until form 3. Data for the research were collected through interview or face-to-face survey. This research utilized both the qualitative research methodology. The researchers use the instrument to collect the data were interview or face-to-face survey with the respondent. An article and a few cut of paragraphs from form 5 literature novel were being constructed for this research. A few words which have inflectional and derivational characteristic were being ask to the respondent. The respondent of the study were students from Melaka randomly pick form any school.
