The roots of the Vietnam conflict can be found in the European colonialism of the previous century. Vietnam, which stretches along the eastern edge of the Indochina peninsula just south of China, became a French colony in the mid-nineteenth century. Resistance to French domination began to grow in the early twentieth century, and a budding independence movement began to emerge in the years following World War I, under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969). During World War II, the Japanese occupied Vietnam, and the French were forced to abandon the colony.
With the defeat of Japan, France assumed that it would resume control of Vietnam and the rest of the territory they called French Indochina, which also included the neighboring countries
The territory that occupies modern-day Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, was part of French-Indochina, as one of France’s collection of many colonies. During World War II, France had
I have thoroughly enjoyed the book so far, and found it and extremely interesting read. It has made me think what i would do if I was in Jimmy Cross’s position, of being drafted into the Vietnam War. Would I ditch the draft and go up to Canada? Or if I did accept the draft, what would I carry? Well, the answer to the first question, of me going up to Canada to ditch the draft, would be yes.
“What do These Sources have to say about the Origins, Nature, Course or Consequence of the Vietnamese Revolution?” During 1945 Vietnam was in a time of true change which needed to come, there was massive unrests due to famine and unemployment, and with the Japanese surrender and the end of the World War, that time had finally come. The Viet Minh had waited a long time for the opportunity to secure the country for the Vietnamese people and gain their independence, it took fifteen days and on 2nd September Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence. This was not to last, since Indochina was about to become a front line for the Cold War.
Social Issue-Vietnam War Cost of Vietnam The Vietnam War that took place between the dates of 1959-1975 changed Americans culture. 58, 000 Americans died America spent 111 billion dollars on the war, according to the Department of Defense. Mr. Frenchy watched his brother, cousins, and acquaintances join the war efforts against communism. Likewise, he participated by joining the army. Not only did this give Mr. Frenchy a reason for leaving New York, but this also posed as an opportunity to stop selling and using drugs.
Beginning around 1876, the French occupied Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, naming it “French Indochine Française” or French Indochina. However, one year into World War II, France fell to Nazi Germany, spiraling into a perfect series of events that led the “age of decolonization” (Fogarty). Ho Chi Minh, a communist/nationalist revolutionary leader, declared Vietnam an independent nation after Japan collapsed in the WWII in 1945. His brother, General Vo Nguyen Giap, won the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 that drove the French out of Vietnam. The following Geneva Conference was an attempt to settle the dispute similar to Korea.
Vietnam had been under French control since the 1880s. Then the Vietnamese fought for independence and won in 1954. The country then was split into communist North Vietnam and non-communist South Vietnam. The Vietcong were a group that opposed democracy in South Vietnam. In the early 1960’s they tried to overthrow the government.
The war of 1812 was an unpopular war, particularly in the New England States. The US had difficulty financing the war because it had disbanded its National Bank and private banks in the Northeast were opposed to the war and made financing difficult. Most New England States refused to allow their state militias to cross the state’s border, thus hampering a major invasion of Canada. 6 The Army consisted of fewer than 12,000 men.
To the Americans, it was the Vietnam War. To the Vietnamese, it was the American War. Either way, on a smaller scale, it was a war between North Vietnam and South Vietnam, but on a much larger scale, it was a proxy for the Cold War. North Vietnam, adrenalized with nationalistic zeal, propagated communism whereas South Vietnam, being held by French colonists, championed westernization. America, never the isolationist, entered the fray for two reasons and two reasons only: one, they owed their French allies from the American Revolution, and two, they sought to retard, if not eradicate, the Domino theory of communism.
“Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don 't criticize What you can 't understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is rapidly agin '
This is done through describing their motives and reasons (mostly the United States’) as to condemn the United States on its hypocrisy. All the while, Vietnam itself is only sparsely mentioned throughout the essay, being relegated a reactionary position with little urgency. At some points the North Vietnam state is expressed in a subordinate, even servant-like, role to the Soviet Union. This contradiction does not detract from the overall argument very much, instead it announces a focus from the very start, but changes part of the way
This paper explores American involvement in the Vietnam War with the purpose of bringing light to the unjustness of American involvement in the war. Through comprehensive research and the use of various articles, this research paper asserts that the Vietnam War was a lie of American democracy and an excuse to spread anti-communist hate. This conclusion was achieved by investigating the various factors of American involvement throughout the Vietnam War. Under fears of expanding communist influence, the American Government used foreign policy to unjustifiably enter the war. Political theory was similarly used to justify entry into the Vietnam War.
Accounts of war always will be documented throughout history, despite the reasoning or significance. War has been brought upon many countries, whether it was country against country or their people against people. In Inside Out & Back Again, we are taken back to Vietnam and are shown many hardships Vietnamese people faced throughout the Vietnam War. Ha, and her family had to leave their country, in order to escape the war between North and South Vietnam. In this journey, the family had to go through suffering as they tried to build themselves back up from the despair the war had brought upon their family.
The Vietnam War was a complex conflict that involved the French, Vietnamese, and Americans, with the Viet Minh and Viet Cong using guerilla warfare tactics to gain independence from foreign control. Despite America's efforts to stop the spread of communism, they eventually realized that the war was pointless, resulting in the fall of South Vietnam and a severe impact on civilians throughout the country. The war demonstrated strong guerilla warfare tactics, along with western warfare strategies. Vietnam Controlled Vietnam was long controlled by the French, ever since September 1 1858, and would eventually leave June 9 1885. The French had gained control of Vietnam making it feel like “home” and modeling major cities in France like Paris.
As a result, the Vietnamese revolted against the French and eventually succeeded under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh, the founder of the Viet Minh, which was the main coalition that led the revolt. French rule made many changes to the lives of the Vietnamese and some negative long-term impacts of their rule is still seen in Vietnam, especially in economics and politics. In order to solve the economic issues created by imperialism, the Vietnamese government needs to prevent further excessive extraction of resources and increase the amount of exports while decreasing the amount of imports. As for politics, although Vietnam has a Communist government, the government should still give the people basic rights such as freedom of
Ho Chi Minh, Former Prime Minister of Vietnam, once said: “You can kill ten of my men for every one I kill of yours. But even at those odds, you will lose and I will win” (Vietnam War Quotations).
