Some people try to run away from their thoughts or others truly are trying to escape the fear and abuse of another person. Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone, yet the problem is often overlooked, excused, or denied. (Domestic Violence and Abuse, http://www.helpguide.org/) As in the case of Katie, the protagonist in the book Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. Katie has been running away from her abusive, alcoholic husband. Her real name is Erin but she takes the identity of her neighbors’ dead daughter. Katie/Erin's character development goes from a naive woman who stays and takes all the abuse. She later realizes that she can't continue living like that and flees but she always lives with fear and always with her guard high in case …show more content…
He would say that he hated what he'd done, but in the next breath tell her she'd deserved it. That if she'd been more careful, it wouldn't have happened. That if she'd been paying attention or hadn't been so stupid, he wouldn't have lost his temper.” (Page 310) When Katie talks about how her husband would treat her, you can tell how naïve she was to think that she could change. “He has sudden mood swings. He switches from loving to angry in a matter of minutes.” (Undeniable Warning Signs That Your Relationship Is Abusive, http://www.yourtango.com/, Oct 23, 2015) These article backs up how Katie was going through an abusive relationship and how he would suddenly change, he’s attitude towards her. “But I hate myself, too. I tried to tell you that that I’m better off alone. I’m not who you thought I was. I’m not the women you think you know.” (page 168) “While one person may suffer greater consequences as a result of abuse than another, there should be no shame involved in how little or much impact is suffered.” (After The Abuse Has Ended, www.mentalhelp.net) Even though the article states that Katie shouldn’t be ashamed Katie can’t help but to try to isolate herself from others that try to help her. Like Alex is trying to help Katie but Katie thinks that she doesn’t deserve his affection because she is a person who still has a lot of issues to work through. But since Alex worked as in the Criminal Investigation Division. “He’d been with Criminal Investigation Division, or CID,” (Page 16) He had prior knowledge as to what to expect of victims and how they would react after being out of an abusive
Secondly, Alex is perhaps a little too trusting. He trusted Lao Xu because he appeared to be a good and knowledgeable person, “Lao Xu was there too. He’s a great guy.”(pg 27) Later in the book, when Eddie talks about Lao Xu being a spy to hurt Alex, Alex exclaims,“ ‘Spy!
Have you ever experienced being alone for a long time? I am not talking about being separated from your parents in a grocery store, I am talking about being alone in the wilderness. The book I just read, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, has a main character who is the only soul who survived a plane crash and now he is stuck alone in the Canadian wilderness. There were two times that Brian had deep feelings that really stood out to me. I am now going to tell you about one of the time Brian had really deep feelings.
Gary Paulsen, the author of “Hatchet” describes one of Brian’s traits by using actions. As stated by this quote, “When he was done he covered the two piles with grass he tore from the lake shore to keep the flies off and went back outside”, (69) Brian used his surrounding environment to produce an answer for a complicated problem. An ordinary person wouldn 't thought of a solution as quickly as Brian did in this particular situation. The answer for this problem seems simple, after you have figured it out. But it’s not simple while you’re looking for it.
In the novel “Hate List”, Valerie Leftman is to return to school five months after her boyfriend, Nick shot several fellow classmates in the school cafeteria. Most of the people shot were on a list Valerie and Nick made and called the hate list. A majority of the school community believes that Valerie was aware of Nick’s plan to kill the kids (she wasn’t aware) despite the fact that Valerie saved someone’s life and got shot in the process. In “Hate List”, Valerie and everyone around her must pick up the broken pieces of fear and sadness after the tragedy. This creates a story that is both universal and so unique that it will leave the reader changed on a fundamental level.
The author Alex Flinn, mostly creates an accurate and unbiased view of the topic in the following way(s), by showing how domestic abuse has hurt many people with the cycle of abuse, types of abusers(Mario), and different views of abuse (Journal to Narrator), but fails to accurately portray different types of abuse in the following way(s) by showing how the Dolphins are a big impact on Nick’s life and why it changed the way he realized he was hurting Caitlyn verbally and physically. In many ways there are many children that had grown up with being abused either mostly verbally or physically. But as the years go on for some children that cycle continues on that they carry on the reason to abuse the loved ones. Flinn has shown many different
Spousal Abuse People often turn away from issues that do not affect them, but this only lets the issue grow further until there is nothing left to do but deal with it. This could be why domestic violence has been taking place for centuries now. One issue that comes with domestic violence is spousal abuse- a problem that only seems to be getting worse, with ten million victims being beaten by an intimate partner each year (“Domestic Violence”). Although spousal abuse seems to be an ongoing issue in the United States, efforts are being made at both national and local levels to suppress the violence.

“Sexual, racial, gender violence and other forms of discrimination and violence in a culture cannot be eliminated without changing culture.” - Charlotte Bunch. Domestic abuse is a hostile dispute involving the use of violence among household or family members. It is a universal phenomenon that occurs in all races, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, occupations, and genders (“What is Domestic Violence?”).
Giving up is a decision people can make in the face of stress; Martin Seligman examined this idea in his original research experiment in 1992. In his experiment, animals were subjected to electric shock where escape was not possible. Following this initial ‘trapped’ experience animals were given the opportunity to learn a response, which would allow them to escape the electric shocks. What Seligman found was that these animals had become so dispirited and apathetic that they did not try to escape the shock even when it was possible. Comparably, a human experiment was conducted using inescapable sound and findings were similar to the animal experimentation.
“Love is the only true safe haven,” a common quote used in a romantic love story, Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. Nicholas Sparks uses the idea of a character moving on from her rough past and having a new future. The awful past events will change around in the future for the good. Everything will happen for a reason. Safe Haven is based on the idea of a young woman newly married into an abusive relationship.
The Good and the Bad Victims of domestic violence are not at fault for the abuse that is inflicted upon them. A lot of people ask why the victim stayed in the first place, but in some cases the answer is not always so simple. According to Why Do Abuse Victims Stay, “We often put ourselves in the place of the victims and imagine ourselves leaving at the first signs of abuse. But breaking free of abuse is not simply a matter of walking out the door. Leaving is a process.”
Some couples experience domestic violence and returning o their lover after being told to leave. Domestic Violence can lead to many things like jail or death. This can mentally and physically hurt and breakdown a person. SVU dedicated an episode to domestic relationships and it was an episode that can be very life changing. In the episode a girl was in love with a singer and the singer was very abusive.
Cassie Logan, the central protagonist of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, has, all her life, been shown confidence, love, and pride in herself, her history, and, most importantly , her family. During this year, though she is only nine years old, Cassie is shown the real world of cruel racism and supposed white superiority. Many people treat blacks as if they are inferior to whites, such as Miss Crocker, the Night Men, and Lillian Jean Simms. These people have specifically impacted dark-skinned Cassie; they have tried to degrade her, and destroy her pride and confidence. Throughout my essay I will be discussing how the characters listed above have tried to reduce Cassie’s worth--only because of her skin color-- and if they have succeeded or not.
In threatening and survival situations, we look for hope or even small sign that the situation may improve. When an abuser or captors shows a victim some small kindness, even though it is to the abusers benefit as well, the victim uses that small kindness as a positive trait of the captor. In criminal or war hostage situations, letting the victim see another day is often enough. Small behaviors, such as allowing a bathroom visit or providing food and water, are enough to strengthen the Stockholm syndrome in criminal hostage events. Stockholm syndrome can be a difficult situation in many criminal justices case.
Leslie Morgan Steiner is telling her story of being in a domestic violence relationship in a speech, given at Ted Talks. The man who she thought was her soulmate, her one true love, turned out to be a man who has pointed a gun at her head multiple times. While telling her personal story, she is pointing out the different stages in any domestic violence relationship, creating a very clear structure. The domestic violence victims in this speech are represented as not the typical victim of domestic violence, to show that anyone can be a victim of an abuser.
