Sal Paradise Character Analysis

Thesis Statement: In the book Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech, Sal changes significantly from a lot of external forces in her life. Robin Sharma once said, “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end.” This quote really relates to Sal because when her mother left she was a mess and it was hard for her. Later, she moved and more things changed and things happened that she didn't expect to happen.

In the novel, A Long Walk to Water, we are presented with two different characters in parallel stories that do not seem to have a connection. Both are struggling and dealing with conflict that presents obstacles and interferes with their objectives. I will explore both characters and make comparisons between the two to support the idea that while both are dealing with different conflicts, they have many things in common. In Salva’s part of the story, he is facing a difficult journey to walk away from the war.

Linda Sue Park hooked readers with the novel A Long Walk to Water. This book is about the true story of Salva Mawien Dut Ariik, who was a lost boy from the second Sudanese War in the 1980’s. Salva was separated from his village and family when he was 11 years old. Salva had many challenges he needed to get through, and used bravery, persistence, and strength to do so. First, Salva’s bravery is a factor in how he survives some difficult situations, one of them is when Salva was walking through the land of the Atuot, where the path is surrounded by lions.

In the book A Long Walk to Water, the main character Salva must overcome a lot of challenges in order for his survival. He is persistent, a hard worker, and just overall a very lucky young boy. These factors are very big reasons for his survival. After reading the book, readers can see that one of the main factors for Salvas survival is hard work.

In both books Bound by Donna Jo Napoli and A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park the main characters Salva and Xing Xing have doubts about father figures in their lives. In Salva’s circumstance, his Uncle, halfway through their journey, tells Salva that he will not stay with him. Salva realizes he will no longer have any biological family with him anymore. He feels betrayed and is lonely for a while after his Uncle’s decision. Shortly thereafter, Uncle is brutally shot and murdered leaving him is alone again.

Perseverance is an important theme in A Long Walk To Water. The first example of Perseverance is when Salva listens to what his uncle says. His uncle uses his full name, and Salva thinks of his family. Uncle tells him to only walk as far as that bush, or clump of rocks. Salva perseveres by thinking of his family.

The book "A Long Walk to Water" talks about how a boy named Salva has to live his life. The part about Salva is real, but the author(Linda Sue Park) decided to spice it up and add a fictional character. The fictional character is named Niya. She has a sister that almost dies in the book. But, as I said she is not real.

In 1983 a war began between northern and southern Sudan and about 2 million civilians were killed and more than 4 million people were forced to flee their homes, those people were called the Lost Boys of Sudan and were fleeing violence and afraid of being forced into. The Lost Boys of Sudan had to walk great distances with limited resources and by the time they all reached a refugee camp in Kenya only about 10,000 out of the original 26,000 survived.
