We are all here today to bring justice to the state of Massachusetts. What you are about to hear may stun you. We are gathered here today to charge Abigail Williams with involuntary manslaughter. Involuntary manslaughter is the crime of killing another human being unlawfully but unintentionally. At the end of 1692 the Salem Court convicted and executed men and women following the Salem witch trials. What were the Salem witch trials? The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts. The trials resulted in the executions of twenty people, …show more content…
In this case Abigail had an affair with John proctor, and later rejected by him. Some of you may know what rejection feels like, rejection is never a good feeling. Rejection has three emotions all followed by one another. Rejection causes you to be upset, but then leads to anger and consequently leads to revenger. Abigail’s emotion took over and instead of choosing with her mind she followed her emotions instead. Witchcraft is another factor in this case. The practice of magic, especially black magic. It is the use of spells, charms, and the invocation of spirits. Abigail was dancing in the woods, drinking blood and using charms to murder John Proctor’s wife. Abigail seeked out venges against John Proctor therefore targeting his wife. In her head she decided that if she couldn’t be with John then no one else could. Abigail saw that the people were afraid, vulnerable and took advantage of the situation to try and save herself. She was afraid that the public will find about her affair with John Proctor, and about the witchcraft that happened that night in the forest. Therefore she did everything in her power to draw attention away from
During her time serving the Proctor family she began to fall in “love” (most likely lust) with John Proctor. This affair was spread around the town as a rumor until Elizabeth Proctor, John's wife, fired Abigail because of her suspicions. Abigail was from then on shunned by most in the village. Her affair caused her to be hated, and since her social standing in the village was already low on the social ladder it contributed to her desire for power.
What Caused the Salem Witch Trial Hysteria of 1692? The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 were a large source of chaos for the small town that ruined the lives for people and their families. During this time many innocent people were accused of witchcraft and were thrown in jail while some were even hanged. It was a terrible event in history that was caused by jealousy, town division, and young girls.
Abigail is just that psychotic girl who can't get over the man who she wants. It was all of her fault that the girls went to the woods because she set the whole thing up. Every time she got alone with john proctor, she tried to do sexual stuff with him and showed him that she wants it all. John proctor is right about calling her a whore because of those
The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 have become a prominent event in American culture. A series of the witch trials took place near Salem, part of the Massachusetts colony, in which more than 150 men and women were accused of witchcraft and dozens deteriorated in jail for months without trials. Those who were found guilty were hanged on nearby Gallows Hill. Only a combination of economic conditions, teenage boredom, and personal jealousies can account for the mass hysteria, spiraling accusations, trials, and execution that occurred in Salem Village, Massachusetts.
In act one we discover that Abigail was fired by Elizebeth Proctor (she was the Proctor's servant) because she had an affair with John proctor. She didnt want to let Elizebeth stop her from being with John and so she takes advantage of the witch trials by accusing Elizebeth Proctor. Abigails Sociapathic personality is made clear during act one when she threatens to kill her friends if they tell anyone about the events that actually occured in the forest. She says “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you” page 26-27. One of the characters that struggles with personal integrity is John Proctor.
The society came to the conclusion that it was witchcraft. Abigail is questioned by her love, John Proctor, about the witchcraft. She reminds John Proctor of their affair, but John does not love her anymore and only thinks of her softly from time to time. Abigail
She at first goes along with what people want to hear; that there are witches in Salem. The people of the town of Salem think that she is their savior and will purify the town of these demonic beings. Then she manipulates the court to get what she wants. Abigail has always wants John Proctor to herself. This means getting rid of his wife, Elizabeth Proctor.
The Salem Witch Trials were one of the most intriguing and mysterious times in the 1600s. The Salem Witch Trial were led by the English Puritan colony living in Massachusetts Bay. The Puritans established their colony because they wanted to practice their religion freely. The Puritans were a "City on a Hill" because they thought they were the model city and everyone would look up to them. But in Spring of 1692, everything escalated with talks and accusations of witchcraft in Salem.
Abigail is so jealous of Elizabeth that she accuses her of stabbing her by doing voodoo. It isn’t true but Abigail risks the chance to accuse Elizabeth of this. Abigail got the court to get a warrant and arrest Elizabeth. Just like she got a warrant and got people arrested when she lied about them doing “witchcraft”. Abigail is trying to get rid of Elizabeth so she can finally marry John and she will do anything in order for her to achieve
The Crucible has many characters to blame when it comes to questioning why everything happened the way they did. It’s hard to describe a reasoning for all of this or exactly who to blame because there is so many different opinions and reasons to why everything is happening. A quote I think that does a fairly good job at this is, “There are wheels within wheels in this village, and fires within fires!”(Miller, Pg.148). The character I think that you can point to first and blame the most when asking why everything in Salem happened is Abigail Williams. There are three major reasons to why Abigail is to blame and the first is because she slept with John Proctor.
The Salem witch trial hysteria of 1692 may have been instigated by religious, social, geographic and even biological factors. During these trials, 134 people were condemned as witches and 19 were hanged. These statistics also include 5 more deaths that occurred prior to their execution date. It is interesting to look into the causes of this stain on American History, when as shown in document B, eight citizens were hanged in only one day.
In Salem, Massachusetts a series of hearings and prosecutions started, commonly known as the Salem Witchcraft Trials. The witchcraft trials in Salem became a big concern after two-hundred innocent people were accused and twenty people were executed. Many people of Salem believed the court was just in accusing all these victims. A seldom amount of people went against the court in saying that the court was a fraud and that the decisions were biased being made. Abigail Williams held all the power in the court and determined who was “guilty” or not.
Abigail told the court that she was guilty but John kept saying that his wife wasn’t guilty. Elizabeth thinks that Abigail wants to kill her for John Proctor. John and Abigail had an affair and Abigail is still trying to get with him. In act 1 page 25 Abigail claims, “I will not, I cannot! you loved me John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!
The Salem witch trial was a time about accusing your fellow neighbor or being accused yourself, this all began in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. During this time many people were being accused of being a witch, a majority of the time it was because either someone truly believed that you were a witch and were reeking havoc or they were trying to find someone to take the blame if they were to being accused. So this leads us to question, what began the Salem Witch Trials? There were at least three causes of the Salem witch trials hysteria. These were Betty Parris and Abigail Williams story, Ergotism, and the acknowledgment of hysteria.
Abigail 's heartless attitude is shown in act two when she frames and accuses Elizabeth Proctor for witchcraft. She desired and longed for this revenge on poor Proctors innocent wife, aiming for her through out the play. Later on in Act Three she seems to lose her last attachment of society by destroying John Proctor, who she claims to love with all her heart. When John attempts and threatens to expose Abigail’s wrong doings, she skillfully manages to turn the whole problem around on him, sending him off
