After watching this video where Michael Moss speaks about Salt, Sugar, and Fat in the American diet, my views about the food industry have changed. I never realized that the government was supporting the dairy industry. It amazed me to learn that the reason Americans are so attached to their dairy products is due to the strong relationship of the government and the dairy industry.
Personally, I really enjoy dairy products. I have also been told by my doctor that it is very important to incorporate calcium into my diet, especially at my age. I feel as though dairy has become intertwined with our society. It is known to be part of a balanced meal, and is present in the well-known food pyramid. Dairy is associated with calcium, a mineral that
By growing more and more corn, to get rid of the surplus, companies have switched to corn sweeteners, and have begun to feed more corn to livestock. “Researchers have found that corn-fed beef is higher in saturated fats than grass-fed beef. ” Capitalism has paved the avenues that allow the government, which is always supposed to be in the public’s best interest, to alter the human diet to such extents that we are now gorging ourselves to our inevitable demise. The American diet is not the only thing that is affected by government
In David Freedman’s essay How Junk food Can End Obesity, Freedman makes the claim to policy arguing that instead of demonizing processed foods, Americans should instead support the idea and production of healthier processed and junk foods. He calls on the public to recognize that while many products on the market these days are labeled as “wholesome” and “healthy”, consumers should learn to become aware of the fat and calorie content in these products because many times they have the same- if not more- fat and calorie contents as that of a typical Big Mac or Whopper. In his essay, Freedman primarily places blame on the media and the wholesome food movement for the condemnation of the fast and processed food industries saying, “An enormous amount of media space has been dedicated to promoting the notion that all processed food, and only processed food, us making us sickly and overweight” (Freedman), he further expresses that this portrayal of the

Michael Pollan and Jim Hightower both expose the truths that aren’t always too apparent in the eye of the beholder, which in this case, is Americans. They both unveil lies and tell truths, which in the end, is more than beneficial to the American society. In a letter to the future President of the United States, Michael Pollan acknowledges the troublesome in food in our society.

Americans are aware that their food is being regulated but many people are unaware of what is being done to make sure the food is safe. To get some perspective on how the United States regulates food it is beneficial to look at Europe's approach. The European Union takes a precautionary approach when it comes to regulating food, this is something that is not seen
The industrial food chain unveils the scary but accurate truths to some of the foods found in our local grocery store. For example, Pollan trails the process of turning cattle in a feedlot to the meals found on our dinner tables. He finds many imperfections in the system--the health problems resulting from feeding the cattle grain and not grass, the overwhelming use of chemicals and antibiotics in crops and animals, and the disgusting and cluttered environments of feedlots and industrialized farms. Section two focuses on organic, or rather, the ambiguous definition of organic foods. Pollan explores the manipulations of labels and advertisements, claiming that their foods are “organic”.

This is outlined by David freedman in his article of “How junk food can end obesity.” David Freedman has credited the “health-food” motion, and followers of it along with Michel Pollan. Although this idea still remains, it isn’t as greatly looked upon as it was when the founders made this nation. The government is trying to make it shine as bright as it did in its earlier years.
Not only are Americans increasing their clothing sizes, they are also eating their way to critical health problems, as well as death. Obesity is a serious factor in the United States that continues to grow more and more each year. But who is truly to blame for this ongoing epidemic? Book Reflection #1 – Salt Sugar Fat Michael Moss takes us into the dark world of the food industry in his book Salt, Sugar, Fat. These food giants know that they have the population hooked with a concoction of salt, sugar, and fat that makes food addictive and tasty. Starting with sugar, I always knew that sugar was addictive and have personally struggled with complete elimination.
Action must be taken by the food industry in order to start eliminating the problems that are causing the society to deteriorate. There are countless health issues within America that continue to grow due to the fact that the food industry is not regulating the food being provided and sole enough.
