If you do the math, that’s about 1 in 9 people global that deal with the issue of hunger. The majority of our global hunger involves most people that live in third world countries where there’s at least 12.9 percent of the population that is living in poverty. Global hunger is caused by poverty. When we think of hunger, we tend to think of food and how only poor people are the only ones hungry. Can you believe that there are millions of people who live with hunger who are malnourished because they simply can’t afford to buy food or purchase the supplies they need to grow enough food for their families?
Feeding America is a nationwide network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that provides food and services to people each year. Together this network is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization. Recently, more families and individuals begin to struggle with hunger due to the cost of living increasing and income from employers not being sufficient enough to feed and take care of a family. Price and income shifts can radically impact the poor and hungry. When prices rise, consumers often move to cheaper, less-nutritious foods, increasing the risks of micronutrient defects and other forms of malnutrition, which can have long-term unfavorable effects on people’s health, development and productivity.
About 500 million people are affected from malnutrition, and 10 million die a year. One way to help them is to have more nutrition programs. Even though nutrition programs are very helpful towards the people in developing nations, there are some bad issues that can affect the power of the solution. Nutrition programs do in fact save many people's lives, but because the programs are most of the time voluntary, there are not enough people to help. If there are not enough people to help, then the people in developing countries cannot receive their proper nutrition.
I do think many of them are specific to poverty within developed nations, but I still found some stark similarities between the issues discussed in the book and the stories of Kenyan farmers from The Last Hunger Season. Just like a family living in poverty in the United States, the farmers in Kenya followed the hidden rule that fortunes are to be shared with the everyone. In Bridges out of Poverty, the case study surrounding Oprah feeling pressured to share her $400 Christmas bonus with members of her community was an extremely similar situation to the farmers in Kenya who always shared their maize and offered money to those in need, even when they were struggling themselves. In addition, the farmers also had to develop their planning and impulse control skills, just as anyone else living in poverty would. The One Acre Fund provided them with the planning resources to know when to plant, how much to plant and how far apart to plant their crops.
The Las Cruces community has various food pantries and shelters to help those struggling with food insecurity. Two in particular that serve not only children, but all who are food insecure is Casa de Peregrinos and the Farmers Market at Mesa Middle School. Casa de Peregrinos is a food pantry that serves not only Las Cruces, but much of the Dona Anna community. Their main pantry is in Las Cruces and is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays both in the mornings and afternoons. People can come and receive groceries and in some cases referrals to other agencies.
Still today, over 40% of people living in sub-Saharan Africa live in absolute poverty. In order to solve the issue concerning poverty and hunger in the following parts of the continent, it is best to fight astute malnutrition in specialized centers that helps bring children back from the rim of starving to death, provide nourishment to millions of kids in the rack of famine and hunger crises, prevent malnutrition through large scale feeding programs, help parents feed the children through farming and small business investments. There are also some organizations set up in Africa in order to help reduce the small children from starvation and diseases, such as Dan Church Aid who has been working in Africa since 1960’s. Today they are active in Angola, Sudan, Uganda, Zambia and the democratic republic of Congo. Their main work focuses on Fighting hunger and poverty, fighting HIV and AIDS, democratization, women rights and Humanitarian mine action.
To expand on that point, Nadira Faulmuller of Oxford University, mentioned in her article that, “The main cause for children doing work is poverty – ‘their survival and that of their families depend on it’. Earning money is an unavoidable necessity for them”(Faulmuller). This is showing that these children that are sent to work, are working to benefit their families and themselves in hopes of pulling each other out of the poverty hole. “For example, when the U.S. Congress threatened to ban the import of clothing made by children under 14 in Bangladesh, around 50.000 of them went from their jobs in the relatively clean textile factories to collecting garbage, breaking bricks, or even prostitution. Many families receive welfare or cash assistance. These families apply for welfare due to low income and then when they get money monthly for food it is called food assistance. This welfare program is called the temporary assistance for needy families (“Welfare Reform”). All over America many families are receiving welfare from the state. The welfare money comes out of the money taxpayers pay in.
Trussell Trust food banks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK. Last year the Trust's UK food bank network fed over 128,000 people. All food that food banks receive is both donated by the public or else supermarkets and sorted by volunteers. The people who visit food banks will receive three days of nutritionally balanced food in exchange for their food voucher. Food banks also make time to speak to the people who visit to help them find other helpful
WFP are one of the major contributors to relief food in the country as it is part of their mandate. WFP is currently providing school meals to 770,000 school children in the northern arid districts of the country. In more semi-arid regions of the country, Kenya’s Ministry of Education is feeding another 750,000 children, which is being carried out through the “Home Grown Feeding Programme”. These types of initiatives are ensuring that at least school children have one good meal a day, which irrevocably puts less stress on the children parents. In Baringo County households are unable to meet their basic food requirements due to the inconsistent rains the country has been facing in 2014.
In the United States alone, 40% of food gets wasted. Robert Lee is a person who was taught not to waste food and understands what it feels like to be hungry. He is a hero by many people because he helps reduce food waste and reduce the amount of hunger all in one non profit organization called Rescuing Leftover Cuisine. The non profit organization has collected tons of food and donated to local shelters. For example, “...the group has rescued 100,000 pounds of food and delivered it to homeless shelters and food kitchens,”(Beasley 1).The organization, Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, has saved a lot of food and fed a lot of hungry people.
Introduction The United States of America implements many programs to aid its citizens in need. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program aims to help feed those who cannot afford to support themselves financially (“SNAP”). They do this by evaluating the financial need of a household based off of their resources, income, deductions, employment requirements, special rules for elderly or disabled, and immigrant eligibility (“Eligibility”). As many governmental programs do, SNAP has battled issues with fraud since the beginning of the program. Unfortunately, some individuals exploit this resource and undermine the integrity of the program (Food Stamp Fraud).
