The Meaning of Salvation Man’s perennial failure. Is humankind basically good as espoused by some today? Even if this view is correct, the ‘good’ according to man’s perspective still fails to meet God’s requirements. The New Testament clearly declares: All have sinned and come short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Although this is an unpopular position, it is the absolute accuracy and an indictment concerning fallen humankind. Each and every spiritually unregenerate individual, a religious Jew or an irreligious Gentile is a sinner. To sin is to break God’s Law (1 John 3:4), knowing or unknowingly. Ignorance of God’s law is not an excuse for sin. According to God’s righteous verdict, all have sinned sin in words, thoughts and deeds. Sinful humankind is alienated from God. However, fellowship with God can now be realized through Jesus Christ (John 1:12) whereby God sent the spirit of His Son into the believers’ hearts, enabling them to call Him, Abba, Father (Galatians 4:6; Romans 8:5). New life in Christ. The salvation that comes from God is not simply patch-up work in human’s lives. Rather, believers in Jesus have their old self, the sin nature nailed to the Cross with Him (Romans 6:6). Moreover, the old self was buried with Christ by baptism, and just as Christ was resurrected by the Father, believers are raised to ‘walk in the newness of life’ (Romans 6:4). Paul declares in 2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new. Eternal life. Romans 6:23 posits: For the wages of sin is death, and the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Eternal life is the future inheritance of the righteous whilst everlasting punishment is the portion of the wicked. Salvation is God’s gift to humankind. However, one has to respond in faith by believing in Jesus Christ to receive it.
