The definition of a lie is; "an intentionally false statement." Paul is lied to numerous times in Tangerine about very serious and important topics. Paul is a twelve year old boy who is legally blind, due to his brother,Erik, who sprayed him in the eyes with white spray-paint. Paul was blinded by Erik, and he doesn't remember it because he was really young, his mom and dad lied to him about what happened to him so that he wouldn't hate his brother. In the novel Tangerine, the author, Edward Bloor utilizes symbols like sand, muck fire, and lightning to exemplify the truth behind the lies. The literal meaning of sand in tangerine is; the sand is put on top of the peat and dirt. The symbolical meaning of sand in tangerine is; the sand is the …show more content…
The muck fire symbolizes Paul’s suppressed memories of all the bad things that Erik did to him as a kid. For example, when Paul is having a fight/argument with Erik and Arthur, he realizes: “And I remember Erik’s fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them.” (Bloor, 263-264) The quote connects to the story because this is when Paul first remembers what Erik did to him to make him blind. The symbolic meaning of the quote is that the muck fire is burning and it is so strong that is bleeds through the sand. “I remembered a black metal mailbox, on a black metal pole. “It was “Erik.” I was saying “Erik.”” (Bloor, 2-3) The quote shows the first time that Paul was having a flash back of the mailbox incident. The symbolical meaning of the quote is that Paul sometimes has memories (flashbacks) that are triggered when the lightning strikes the muck fire. Lastly, when Paul just got home from school, he was told: “That was Sarah from next door. She said somebody has smashed up all the mailboxes and spray-pathe wall.” (Bloor, 263) The quote shows that Sarah had just called to tell the Fisher family to tell that somebody was smashing the mailboxes and spray painting the walls. The symbolic meaning is that, for the second time the mailbox incident has come up again and that the muck fire, towards the end of the story burns strong. Paul has been …show more content…
The symbolic meaning of lightning is; when Erik bullies Paul, and it ignites his memories. For example, when Paul and Erik are having an argument and he reveals “Shut up, Caster!” When Erick was bullying Paul after the senior night, they got into an argument, and Erik had yelled “Shut up, Caster,” to Arthur. Symbolically speaking, whenever Erik starts to bully Paul, he starts to get a glimpse of his memories; the lightning strikes on the muck, and it ignites. In addition, while Joey and Paul are on the patio, he hears. “Joey, they’re making fun of your brother. They’re making fun of mike when his hair got burned off by the lightning. And they’re making fun of you for trying to take his shoes off at the field.” The quote shows that Erik is making fun off Joey for taking of Mike’s shoes after he was struck by lightning. The symbolic meaning is that Erik is yet again bullying Paul, and if Paul knew what was hidden underneath the sand, he would be mad about more than Erik just making fun of Joey. Lastly, when Paul was testing his eye sight, he observes. “Suddenly I felt the hot breath of a predator on my neck. I screamed in terror. Erik laughed and ran over to Mom and Dad. He had snuck up on me from behind, from somewhere back around ten o’clock. Dad snapped at him, “Erik! Cut that out! Are you here to help us or not?”” The quote is showing that they were testing Paul’s
In addition, the entire situation that Paul goes through when his father “drags [him] along to a table with a lot of others. ”(p. 166) He sees that they don’t understand what war is like at all, as when “a head-master shakes hands with [him] and says: ‘So you come from the front? What is the spirit like out there? Excellent, eh?
The reason why this has a negative impact on Paul is because his parents told him a lie so he would not hate is older brother. Eric also hit Tino with a black jack smashing him so hard that Tino passes out . Erik did this because tino made fun of him. The reason why this has a negative impact on Paul because he did not do anything and makes him feel small. Outsiders most likely think Eric is a Nice Football Player but that is
Brian Fitzgerald, the father of Anna, Kate and Jesse Fitzgerald, is a firefighter and spends his days battling the fires, both real and symbolic, which destroy other people’s lives. Unfortunately, he is unable to fight the fires within his own life, and this leads to the destruction of his ability to save his family from the difficult situations they face. The Fitzgerald family’s medical and moral issues that stem from Anna being born as a medical donor for Kate affect each of the characters in different ways. In My Sister’s Keeper, fire is the mechanism used to symbolize these problems that the Fitzgerald family faces. Fire in a general sense is the combustion that occurs when fuel reacts with oxygen to release heat energy.
Paul seems to be afraid of Erik, which is reasonable given the things that he has put Paul through. For example, Paul is a constant punching bag for Erik, as he mocks him and feels superior towards him; Erik being the older sibling and thus has more freedom. The story also gives hints that Erik has something to do with Paul's lack of peripheral sight. However, despite that Paul is afraid of Erik, is doesn't mean that Paul isn't willing to indirectly go against him. He has seen many heinous things that Erik has done, like punching Tino and mocking Mike Costello, so he seems to be waiting for the right time to strike.
Another symbol is the road, which is a desolate, transient thing full of danger, the man refers to them as "blood cults". The director really emphasises the importance of the fire by the way it contrasts against the gloomy dark post apocalyptic
This quote shows why Paul would hate his brother. Paul remembers that his brother let his friend spray paint into his eyes and that instead of protecting his brother, Erik pries open his eyelids so that Vincent can spray paint in his eyes. The reason Erik got mad was because Paul “told on” Vincent for spray painting a neighborhood wall. The effect it has on Paul is that now he has to wear glasses and is scared of his brother because of all the mean and horrible things he has seen him
The first big choice that Erik made that affected Paul was when he hit Tino in the face.(205) “Immediately, faster than I thought he could, faster than Tino thought he could, Erik lashed out, smashing the back of his hand across Tino’s face, smashing him so hard that Tino spun halfway around in the air and landed on the grass. Erik did this because Tino made fun of him and he got angry. This affected Paul because he didn't do anything, it made him feel small. Paul says, “ I just stared back at her, paralyzed with fear, while the scene rolled on.”(204) This shows that Paul knew Erik was going to do something bad, he did nothing.
When Paul was young, Erik and a friend of his put spray paint in Paul’s eyes, which left Paul a visually impaired person for the rest of his life. “And I remembered Erik’s fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them. ”(Bloor 263) Erik accused Paul of telling on the teachers and getting Castor in trouble.
After a series of events, Paul’s wife ultimately dies in childbirth. Paul, who fully loses his eyesight, is banished into the vast, empty desert, where he is left to live out his life. Frank Herbert displays that power leads to failure leading to his downfall through the use of dynamic characterization throughout the novel. First, The development of a dynamic character, Duncan Idaho, proves that power leads to failure.
“Erik. He tried to kill me,” (Bloor 3). This event ended up causing Paul not to be trusted by his parents because Erik was sitting in the dining room doing homework. Erik lied to Paul making him believe that he was partially blinded by looking at an eclipse for so long but Paul knew that was fake. “I remember Erik‘s fingers prying my eyelids
The most important way Erik impacts Paul is he causes Paul’s life to become full of constant fear and anxiety. This is proven by Bloor when his character Paul states, “I have always been afraid of Erik” (42). Paul has been afraid of Erik his entire life, as Bloor indicates by this quote. The quote also gives the reason why Paul tries to avoid Erik, and sets up the
I’m afraid Arthur now too.” Paul has a low self-esteem. He is weak and does not think that he can stand up for himself. “I can see things that Mom and Dad can’t. Or won’t.”
(page 12) This infers that Paul is scared of Erik. In conclusion, Paul doesn’t want Erik to hurt him, so he stays in his room all day avoiding Erik. Erik calls Paul Eclipse Boy because Paul believe he lost his eye
Government organizations often use symbols to portray their power or military strength. Writers also use symbols to convey a message to the reader. In his novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses symbols to help readers track the loss of civility of the boys. The fire is both a symbol of hope and the reckless behavior of the boys.
In Greg Peterson’s, view, a renowned environmentalist "Our downfall as a species is that we are arrogant enough to think that we can control Mother Nature and stupid enough to think it is our job.” But we as humans ignore that fact, we ignored it for centuries and we still do. In Tangerine, we see that that idea is perfectly woven into the story. In Tangerine, most people are not affluent and the land there had gone through many stages of development that worsens the rift between man and nature but yet they have an uneasy balance with nature. One that may not last.
