A universal theme is “a message about life or human nature that is so fundamental to human existence that is true for all people of all time periods and cultures.” (Sato, 76) These themes aren’t restricted to just one particular place or time, but reappear over and over again, all over the place. “Themes in literature tend to recur because human beings are more similar than different, no matter what the culture.” (Sato, 77)

No one wants to be different but, everyone is. One of the main reason is culture. There are so many cultures that it makes it seem you are different from everyone else. In “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan, and “Taco Head” by Viola Candales both narrators face internal conflict with their culture and how people see them. They struggle with who they are, and who they want to be. The narrator's are similar and different in many ways. Both narrators learns a lesson about being proud of their culture, but the lessons came from different people in their lives so, that affected them in different ways and what they took away from the lesson.

In the poem “A Story” by Li- Young Lee, the audience is introduced to the intricate relationship between the father and the son. There is an obvious internal conflict ongoing within the father’s thoughts; the father desperately wants to tell his son a story but cannot come up with one. The author highlights the altering views held by the father and the son through the use of shifting points of view and the intended structure. These two devices adeptly establish the poem’s profundity and intensity of emotions; moreover, it brings light to a common battle that evolving filial relations face against time; as innocence eventuates into maturity, parents inevitably feel helpless and nostalgic.

Every so often, we take for granted those who are important in our lives. Sometimes, we can ignore those who we think will always be there. The fact it, one day, they won’t. However their different genres, change in characters, and mood give a contrasting interpretation of their essential message.

While on the quest to uncover their hidden family secrets, they learn about the legend of the mountain man. At the end of the story, the kids learned that their family had been hurt for a long time and that they were grieving the death of their son who died years ago.
