Sandra's Childhood Observation

Among other essays I have read in this book, the essay El Camino Doloroso written by David Searcy seems to have won my heart over the other ones. This story is short; in fact, it only has three pages, but the message Mr. Searcy conveys surpass these simple pages. To be honest, I have to read this essay three times to understand what is going on with the character and what is happening in this story. At last, I come up with this: In this essay, David Searcy wants those who believe dreams are flaws and useless to think that dreams and love are those that motivateki people to live.

On this journey, on the road of life, those will meet many different kinds of people. People will find many great individuals out in this big world actually have some kind of a dark side to them. It does not matter how nice they are to your face. At any point, they can turn right around and stab you straight in the back like you never even mattered to them. As one critic says,” Here, relying on her Southern cultural and religious heritage to set the scene, she writes of the innocence and corruption that can coexist within people”. In the story, “The Life You Save May Be Your Own,” by Flannery O’Connor, she uses characterization, conflict, and theme by explaining that people are not always what they appear to be.

The nature of Russian society is characterized by a sense of idealism. Russia’s beliefs of the potential for an ideal future have been pervasive throughout history. In 1920, Yevgeny Zamyatin wrote the short story “The Cave” during the midst of the Russian Civil War, a time when nationalism was at an all time low and people were hoping for a brighter future. In contrast to the goals that sparked the revolution, Zamyatin argues that the Russian Civil War will result in a primitive and decimated society that is ultimately worse off than the society that existed prior to the rebellion.

Meredith Hall is mother is faced with divorce in “Killing Chickens”. Isolated by the betrayal of her husband’s adultery with her best friend, she tackles the chores he left behind while celebrating her 38th birthday with her two sons.

What common themes bond together the literary works of the 1800’s? Frederick Douglass and Kate Chopin both realized that people were not being treated fairly and thus it influenced their writing. Through personal experiences and observations Frederick Douglass conveyed how African Americans in My Bondage and My Freedom were treated unfairly. Kate Chopin used the plot to show how women were treated unfairly in “The Story of an Hour”.

On the other hand, Judge Danforth is what we would see in justice and can be consider evil. Danforth is an aggressive man that has power and can be ignorant when taking decisions. Danforth will stick to what the books says while Hale resort to other ways to please and find internal peace. In the beginning of the book, both Danforth and Hale begin with almost identical mindsets. Reverend Hale ends up in an all time low, yet he is able to find who he truly is, while Danforth gets lost and loses his identity. In the end, each of these two characters find who they are, one is noble and moral and the other is cold blooded and

No matter how we try to change our situation or better ourselves in society, variables will obstruct the path we choose. One cannot take control of everything that surrounds us as fate decides what happens to us. In Cold Blood by Truman Capote explains the murder of the Clutter family in the quiet town of Holcomb, Kansas. The murderers, Richard (Dick) Hickock and Perry Smith, try to escape the consequences of their actions, believing that they can get away with what they did. The story tells what the murderers were thinking after and before they committed the crime and their various interactions. Hickock and Smith’s mindset are explained throughout their journey as they try to evade an inevitable fate. The theme that people cannot always control

The short story, “The Knowners,” is a fictional tale of an alternate reality where mankind has invented a technology which can divine the exact day, upon which a person will die. The story focuses on the impact upon one woman’s life from knowing her own ‘expiration date.’ The story was written by Helen C. Phillips.

It is important for people to overcome the obstacles they are faced with. Obstacles allow us to learn and become successful. In novels a character will often be faced with a problem. Just like a book, everybody has their own story filled with challenges. Recently I have read two novels that deal with sensitive topics and obstacles. Several years ago my grandma had very serious health issues. Each of these examples showcase the fact that it is important for everybody to experience obstacles in their life.

After reading this book “Mama Might Be Better off Dead” my perception of life has changed. I guess this story open my eyes of to what could happen to a family if they do not have adequate healthcare in America. My eyes became open to the point that many American families are suffering and are crying for help and if not addressed the cry will become louder, due to the expected increase in the ageing population in America in the next twenty years. Coming from a similar background as the Bane’s family, where I’m also African American born and raised on the Westside of Chicago, and also grow up in a life of poverty, I guess this book had a direct affect on me. At the age of ten struggles had become my reality and my parents did their best to shield us from its brutal force. My parents that were immigrants from Haiti barely spoke English and clerked the miniature market business that they started. However, after many attempts trying keeping the business afloat, they needed to close their store. Shortly after, we received a thirty day eviction notice, and my mother was pregnant with my youngest sister. We were already struggling financially with many bills. When I stared at my father’s eyes I saw a man who felt hopeless. It was the first time I saw him cry. All our burdens were placed on him. He did not find support through Cambridge Public Housing. I watched my father’s hopelessness turn to desperation. Although all odds were against him, he had to fight and developed an insatiable desire to not quit. A natural human instinct is to do anything in order to survive. Though a person may not necessarily want to survive, the physical body of a person does. The body naturally will try to do anything in order to protect itself and survive even when the person does not notice. Survival comes at a cost that not all people are willing to pay. To survive there are struggles and obstacles that not all are willing to face, but to get through these obstacles an individual is one step closer to survival. In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak this can be seen. Zusak purposes that man must suffer before they are able to heal in order to become empowered to survive.

Dementia is one of the most feared diseases and expensive to society currently. It is defined as a clinical syndrome of acquired cognitive impairment that determines decrease of intellectual enough capacity to interfere social and functional performance of the individual and their quality of life. It is a known fact that patients tend to express themselves through their behaviour and expect their carers to understand this notion. The diverse kinds of causes of different behaviours are inability to communicate, difficulty with tasks, unfamiliar surroundings, loud noises, frantic environment, and physical discomfort. An unloved marriage can be one of the most intricate and dreadful parts of an individual’s identity. It influences many aspects of an individual. freedom, independence, individuality as well as emotional growth and moral orientation. A person’s interaction and connection with a unloved marriage is the foundation of their character, of the kind of people they will grow to be, and the values they will uphold in their daily lives. In the story “The Story of an Hour,” Kate Chopin demonstrates the role of marriage in defining the individual by contrasting and highlighting the value individuals place on the marriage and love that they consider theirs.
