The Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting was one that shocked the nation and opened the eyes of Americans everywhere. This horrible event opened up our eyes to the fact that someone could easily come into a school and raise havoc with ease. This man, Adam Lanza, had no affiliation with Sandy Hook or any one inside it but still decided to take the lives of 20 children and 6 adults before taking his own. In the statements made by Joe Scarborough from his show “Morning Joe”, he says “Every American must know from this day forward that nothing can be the same again.” This is a very powerful statement because it brings up an important point. It shows that we cannot change what has already happened, but we can use these horrific events as a learning
After the tragic and cold-hearted school killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut, 20 children and 6 adult staff members were fatally shot. The number of school shootings within the past few decades has risen dramatically, which is just not acceptable. How can anyone accept the thoughtless cruelty with these young precious lives being treated like they are replaceable?
These acts of violence make school a place of fear rather than a place of safety. When did school become a place to worry and feel unsafe? Not only that but this event is a vicious cycle and as of right now it is unable to be contained. The news stories on the media of these events may be aimed to show people how tragic they are, but the shooters take the news stories as inspirations and school shootings continue to be on the rise.
Tucson Area Shooting After the shooting outside the supermarket near Tucson, Jared Loughner’s sanity was being questioned. This took place at an event that was being held by then-congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford for her constituents. During the shooting six people lost their lives, including a nine year old, and twelve people were hurt beside Gifford. For this action, Loughner who was 23 at the time was charged with forty-nine felonies.
On April 19, 1995 our lives as Oklahomans changed forever. A single man named Timothy McVeigh, with the help of two others, took the lives of 168 people and ruined hundreds. Out of those 168 people, 19 of them were little children and even babies from the daycare. He took the lives of innocent children and people that were strangers to him. Timothy McVeigh most definitely should have received the death penalty instead of life in prison.
The Oklahoma City bombing was a large tragedy that ruined families and took many lives. Timothy showed iniquity by not thinking of any of the precious lives due to the hatred he had for the government. Timothy McVeigh committed an unforgivable crime on Wednesday April 19, 1995. McVeigh took 168 lives and injured 842 people by bombing the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (Casey). Many Americans argued weather McVeigh should live or die.
As mentioned earlier, Timothy McVeigh saw the US government as bullies to the people. McVeigh argued that drastic measures had to be taken to send a message and that there had to be body count in order to even be heard . McVeigh also claimed that this was a pre-emptive strike against the government and personally admitted the Waco Siege was part of his motivations to acts as he did . He also had stated he “borrowed a page from US foreign policy ” as the US does have a known history of acting similarly to McVeigh and Co. This lead to the largest criminal investigation in American history and caused a fear of numerous following bombs in Oklahoma .
Introduction DONE On December 14, 2012, the Sandy Hook Elementary School experienced a horrific mass shooting, one of the worst in the United States. I will provide direct comparisons to the event and theory while also including the strengths and weaknesses of each when integrating to get a more accurate assimilation. Current Event DONE
It is still most obvious to all of us that remember New York City, NY, September 11, 2001, a day that ever American came to realize that the blanket of security we felt we had over us had been stolen when the twin towers came crashing down upon the streets of New York City. How many of us watch our children leave every morning or drop them off at school and have the exception of safety once they are there only to see the horrors of Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012, a day our children’s innocence was taken from them by a deranged killer. April 15, 2013, Boston Massachusetts, a day that many look forward to and work year round to be able to run in, only to see the crowd at the Boston Marathon became flummoxed as bombs began to detonate killing innocent victims at the finish line. We can only watch in dismay on live television at home as another
Sierra Holtsclaw Mr. Litz American Lit Period 2 The Shooting As a result of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold's stomach-turning actions in the columbine shooting, security measures were taken to improve students and staffs safety not just in school but all around the united states. Dylan and Eric were not very popular in school and statistics of school shootings show that kids that are victims of bullying are “twice as likely to bring a weapon to school” (Mother Jones par2). Many people tend to overlook the situation of bullying in school and social media.
Would you want to live in fear? Especially at a place that you feel safe. A place that you are required to go to by law. A place that children roam the hallways, learning and having fun. Can you imagine, going to this place every day, until one.
Incorporating this information appropriately and revising the curriculum to view both of the horrible incidents from a logical, comparative place is important in delivering the details and viewing them both as the atrocities they are, not just one of them. (Pawlowicz and
A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
School shootings are a reoccurring problem in the United States. As of 2018, there have been over 18 school shootings in America (Cuddy). However, this is nothing new to us. Every year they are countless reports of school shootings ending in injury or death. It should be obvious that schools are the safest place for parents to send their children during the day, the sad truth is, it is not.
Conspiracy theories are widely known in the society that we live in today. Webster’s definition of a conspiracy theory is a theory that explains an event or situation as the result of a secret plan by usually powerful people or groups. Conspiracy theories are accepted by many people in the world that we live in today. A recent conspiracy theory involves the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed twenty students.
School Shootings: How We All Miss the Point... The aftermath of a school shooting is tragic, depressing, and causes hatred for the lives lost and the person who took them. Everyone, especially the media, tries to interpret why the shooter killed their victims, or why they felt the need to end others’ lives and their own. How We All Miss the Point on School Shootings, by Mark Manson, explains what and why these mass shootings happen. He starts by using examples of shootings and the murderer’s past.
