Sangam literature and depiction of women: When a community's object of worship is a female, it is expected that the women of that community benefits. However, when we see the statistics on their sex ratios, life expectancy, literacy rate, income, violence against them, availability of opportunities, they have a poor value. This data shows that the ideology that a society that promotes worship of female deities and leaders does not really have a positive effect to the common women and their well-being. However much Hinduism is founded upon such religious texts, there are other elements like traditions, arts, etc. that define religion. Thus, all of these must also be remembered and analysed while studying Hinduism, because the women’s roles also represent the culture and traditions. For instance, in Bharatanatyam, a dance form is a form of dance that talks about the the hindu gods, to propagate the hindu culture. Its sole purpose is to propagate the religion. I would like to make myself clear that I have not studied the Tamil literature extensively. Being a vast topic to be covered, the beauty and the richness of the language can be understood and interpreted with the help of Tamil scholars only. …show more content…

The literature that was written during this period is called as Sangam literature that deals with a range of everyday themes. The texts were written by both men and women. The region where this literature flourished is called as Tamizhagam that included most of today’s Tamil Nadu and Kerala and some parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Some say that the natural language spoken in Tamizhagam was Tamil but there are others who oppose this and there are accounts supporting both the arguments.
