Located 16 kilometres from the Town Centre, the dam supplies water to the entire region, as well as one-third of Australia’s water and irrigation needs. The dam is 100 percent safe for walking with young children, and is also a popular biking trail among locals and tourists. But strolling along the Hume dam is not the only thing you can do in the area. There is absolutely no reason for you to miss Lake Hume, for one thing it is only five minutes away from Hume Dam and there are plenty of areas you can park your motorhome, so you can go out and enjoy the fresh air and spend the day by the shore. The lake is deeper than Sydney Harbour and is a favourite among water sports enthusiasts and recreational boaters.

All I needed was a head-turn from the boogie boarders at Point Mugu to right across the PCH. There stands the Santa Monica Mountains National Park. Perfectly enough, I like hiking and knew bare to nothing about these mountains. And if I learned anything from Mike Hansyn and Robert August in Bruce Brown’s surf classic The Endless Summer, it is that trips with friends are more fun. Safer too, but more importantly fun.
As we pull up to the parking area at the start of the trails, I knew that our excitement during the long drive was worth it. I had planned this trip for months. Toiled over the minor details; the food, shelter, entertainment, parking pass, you name it. This was something I had wanted to do since I was just a little kid and now that I was here, it felt surreal. The sound of nature all around us, no signs of man besides our canoe and gear for as far as I could see.
