A Choice between Abundance and Scarcity Mentalities The worst form of poverty in life is that which is associated with the mind. Through education however, populations can conveniently and effectively be delivered from ignorance, the key ingredient of the said poverty. This is applicable to all the people and circumstances, not only in the developing, but also in the developed world. Further, the knowledge acquired helps in delivering people from disease as well. Worryingly though, 90% of the population anywhere, do the same things in the same way. More still, they influence each other to think the same, as we learn from the late Jim Rohn, a respected author and motivational speaker. The situation resembles the struggles in the animal kingdom as elaborated in Charles Darwin’s evolution theory that was noted earlier. This survival of the fittest involves scrambling for scarce resources and opportunities. Naturally, this becomes the source of entrenched greed, graft, favouritism, bribery and all other malaise bedeviling the society. Our journey into the future could be bumpy if pursued under the influence of the scarcity mentality. When we embrace this mentality, we evolve into victims of the circumstances around us. As individuals, we become totally disempowered and can only respond to the dictates of the environment in which we are living in. Life under such circumstances becomes nasty, brutish, frustrating and sometimes very short. Evidently, some of the evolutions continually occurring in the environment around us gravely threaten the welfare of humanity. Think of global warming and its effects on environmental degradation, for instance. If left untamed, the same can present overwhelming challenges related to meeting food, energy and health needs of the continually increasing population. Perhaps, some insights from the animal kingdom could be helpful in understanding and eventually solving these challenges amongst
