In a world of shrinking budgets and competing interests, schools have many challenges when it comes to developing a budget. In addition to ensuring that students meet high standards on standardized tests, which are almost always paper and pencil tests, business leaders put a lot of pressure on schools to ensure that students master “real world” skills, and the “real world” is flooded with technology. So, how should schools go about deciding when and how to use technology in curriculum and instruction? What are the most important a school district should consider before using technology in curriculum in instruction? Technology, well used, can save school districts money, which is why some schools now “shun printed textbooks” (Source A). A students with a $60 Kindle can have free access to thousands of classic books (and Wikipedia) that are now out of print. Compared to buying novels, for example, at $10. a book, Kindles (or the equivalent” can save district lots of money, and that is a good thing.
In addition to saving districts money, school districts should consider the benefits of technology. Having a fancy gadget does not correlate to deep learning. Therefore, the use of technology should be directly tied to learning goals. What does the research say? This is the question that school districts should consider. As Dyson says, “We’re living longer and thinking shorter” (Source C). If the technology doesn’t helps students learn deeply, in a meaningful and significant way, it should be
