In 2010 the federal government instituted a new “healthy” lunch program for public schools. On the White House website this law appears as part of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign and is named the “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.” The website states the aim of the law is to “provide all children with healthy foods in schools....and to improve nutrition while focusing on reducing childhood obesity.” Among other things the law gives the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) the authority to set nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in schools.
Congress passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA) in 2010 with the aim of increasing the minimum nutritional standards that school lunches must meet. The nutrition makeover included: increasing the amount of whole grains, shifting to fat free or low-fat milks, offering fruits and vegetables, and reducing the amount of sodium (School Lunch Debate:What’s At Stake?). In our school alone, 1,009 of the 2,227 students qualify for free or reduced lunch (Free/Reduced Lunches By School). The youth programs of MGH were aimed to impart health and science to the children and college students of Boston, Chelsea and Revere (MGH, nd, MGH Youth Programs). A goal of Revere CARES of MGH is to improve the health of the residents of Revere by improving healthy eating and living, and preventing substance abuse (MGH, nd, CCHI, Revere CARES).
