It is not possible for schools to have adequate security or protocol in place to address major attacks of violence. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, there were never more than nine school shootings in one academic year, but these numbers are increasing. However the school security only is getting better, showing it is impossible to secure every school perfectly. In 1999, the Columbine shooting had a security system, video footage, and armed guards at the buildings. This still did not protect the school from weapons entering the buildings and violence from occurring. In Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012, prior to the attack the principal, Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, ordered a new security system to be installed. This system made doors lock automatically …show more content…
Only 41% of adults in the U.S. with a mental health condition received mental health services in the past year. Among adults with a serious mental illness, 62.9% received mental health services. There are no laws that require people with critical mental illness to get treatment. The United States says for any minor their legal guardian has the ultimate control over them. Dr. Ford from Yale said, “The Yale team offered a comprehensive approach, but the family pulled away from that and did not work with the team in part because Mrs. Lanza did not think that was possible for Adam and she wanted to keep Adam sheltered.” Every possible treatment could have been offered yet Lanza's mother felt she was inclined to accommodate his disabilities rather than treat them. Regardless of the warning signs, diagnosis, and concerns from all aspects of his life, his mother still had authority in how to handle Lanza. Laws make it essential that everybody is guaranteed health care in some way. However, this does not mean that healthcare professionals have the right to step in and protect individuals by taking action and doing what is best for a particular person. The United States health system failed to make treatment mandatory for these disturbed individuals, like Lanza. No matter the significance of the diagnosis, treatment is in the hands of a guardian, which isn't always the best …show more content…
The results of these consequences hurt the lives for families, children, and communities around the nation. Laws must adapt to prevent these events from occurring in the future. It is impossible to see change unless limitation on gun laws, restriction of social exposure, and mental health treatment are further explored and put in place. These were the main factors that led to the day at Sandy Hook Elementary, and will continue to be the cause of mass murder attacks if not addressed. The United States must be addressing situations and furthermore preventing them by creating laws that restrict the leading causes. United States and congress must realize the power that lies in their hands. As president Obama stated, taking action is the most important initiative that can lead to change, and regardless of modern politics it must be done. History can hurt the lives of many but using the past to prevent the future is critical to protect the lives of many adults and children. While it is impossible to go back in time, understanding the contributing factors will assure the same events don't repeat itself. This is critical for the safety and security of younger generations. If done, school shootings and violent attacks would reduce and could eventually stop recurring in the world we live in today. However, as seen in modern
There are different steps for school safety now because Columbine High School and the police were a big factor in “dropping the ball” when it came to the Columbine shooting. So many people missed a lot of signs, especially the police station. Brookes Brown and his family warned the police about Eric Harris for more than a year before Columbine, when the Brown family was threatened by Eric multiple times. It is revealed that the Browns family “had contacted the sheriff’s department about Eric fifteen times”(165). Although they contacted them fifteen times the police station never took their concerns seriously, yet if they had taken their concerns seriously there is a possibility that Columbine would have never happened.
On December 14, 2012 is the day that the citizens of Newtown, Connecticut experience sorrow And the wrong type of fame. On Dec. 24, 2012 a man named Adam Lanza took the life of his own mother by shooting her in the head and then traveled to a nearby school called “sandy Hook Elementary” and releasing hell on 20 unfortunate children between the age of 5-10 and 6 adults that gave up their lives to protect the young ones. This devastating day had a big impact on all of society, not just the citizens that live in Newtown but in other states and countries. Adam was a young man that terrified kids to go to school, also had an effect on parents accepting they lost of family and friends, and finally the law to have a firearm changed after the board
First off, if we arm teachers the likely hood of a school shooter being able to successfully attack a school will be very minimal. Imagine being a school shooter, and seeing a school with perhaps 20 armed personnel, the possibility of
A simple way to stop school shootings in our district would be by eliminating all the factors that form a school shooter. Most school shooter suffered from bullying or had some sort of mental illness. In order to minimize the chance of a kid becoming a school shooter, we need to increase awareness.
The 26 Lives that Changed America On December 14th, 2012 the United States of America broadcasted the third deadliest massacre by one man alone of 26 lives. (Wikipedia) Bullets rang through the halls of Sandy Hook Elementary School that morning, murdering 20 children and 6 adults. Each child had a name, a family, and a future they never got to fulfil. During the aftermath of the Sandy Hook massacre, parents were terrified of the possibility their kid could be next.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Since the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, there have been over 30 more school shootings resulting in 160 fatalities. The majority of these have been committed by one or more students who walk through the front doors and open fire. These kids have had easy access to guns, some of which were military style assault rifles. The frequency of school shootings since 1999 has risen and is consistently rising. There may be no way to stop them from happening anymore unless we institute stricter gun laws.
These shootings are scary to even comprehend. When they become directly associated with our own lives because of a family member, friend, or ourselves are at the front line, it’s almost unimaginable. Which is why intruder trainings need to be enforced, students need to have some sort of preparation, teachers need to feel like they can protect their students, and we all need to feel like schools are a safe place to send our children. Schools should be a safe place to go to work without being terrified someone might come to campus with a weapon. Schools should be the last place someone things to physically attack anyone.
School shootings are starting to become a norm in today 's world. This is something we can only take precautions for but, we cannot completely stop school shootings from happening. Banning guns is not the option because the shooters are still going to find a way to get their guns. We should not punish everybody for the stupidity of some people 's actions. "At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado two teens went on a shooting spree on April 20, 1999, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide" (Columbine Shooting, 2018).
Many schools in today’s society suffer from shootings at some point while children are attending school. Shootings in schools are not a new occurrence, and America has dealt with multiple shootings in public schools in which the lives of many children and teachers have been undeservingly taken (Elliott 528). Because of school shootings, this leaves our children in danger with no way to protect themselves. Gun violence in schools is an evident problem, and there are several ways to reduce the number of incidents, such as mental health screening for owners of guns, interconnectedness of communities, and more school funding.
On, February 14, 2018, a mass school shooting in Florida got the nation’s attention, however, gun violence has always been an issue, and it is only getting worse. Now people are saying there needs to be something done, and there are many that agree. Starting off there should be stricter gun laws, because in today’s world it is too easy to get handguns and assault rifles. With, the capabilities a firearm holds, such as taking people’s lives there must be stricter restrictions that could help cut down the gun violence and save lives. Increasing the age of purchasing a firearm would be one step.
To end the violence, metal detectors should be placed in every public school across America to ensure the safety of the school 's students and staff. Public schools in America have been challenged a lot in the past few years. They have been constantly questioned due to recent school shootings. The most recent tragedy occurred where “seventeen people [were] killed by a gunman [on February 14, 2018] at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida” (Levenson and Sterling).
Resolutions are vehemently being sought to protect schools from possible attacks and to objectively eradicate deadly school shootings altogether. Commonly, security officers are placed in schools in hopes that increased surveillance will inhibit violent outbreaks (Crawford and Burns 2016). Mixed evaluations have been found in association with security officers, while some benefits reportedly transpire, experiences of disparaging consequences remain a regrettable reality as well (Crawford and Burns 2016). Additionally, active shooter drills routinely occur at schools across the nation, however, as Jillian Peterson and James Densley report in their CNN article titled, “The Usual Approach to School Security Isn’t Working,” studies indicate that
How many innocent children have to be brutally murdered before it is enough? This has been an uprising topic in today’s society since school shootings are so prevalent. From Kentucky, to Oregon, to Colorado, to Florida, the safety of our nation 's schools have been shattered by gunfire. The ones who have committed such horrible crimes have done these actions for many different reasons, at different times, and at different schools. Yet, they do have at least one thing in common.
Much of the criminal activity that takes place today is heavily related to the lack of treatment for mental illness. According to the US National Library of Medicine, approximately 60% of shooter in mass shootings that took place in the United States after 1970 displayed symptoms of acute paranoia, delusions, and depression before committing their inhumane acts. I am sure that most of you are aware of the Sandy Hook shooting that took place on December 12, 2012. The perpetrator, Adam Lanza took the innocent lives of 20 students as well as the lives of 6 staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Lanza had displayed key signs of mental illness as young as the age of three.
