Removal of the violence in video games is also another possible solution for school shootings. The two teenage shooters involved in the 1999 Columbine High School shooting are said to have been involved with playing violent video games, which is stated in the article “Violent Video Games - ProCon.org.” People think that since there are violent acts in these video games, the children that play them will act out on them and try to recreate them. Researchers at the University of Missouri conducted a study to see how a group a people’s brains were affected by violent and nonviolent video games. After twenty-five minutes of playing these games the researchers showed the group of people different images. Some of these images were violent and others were not. When they showed the group of people the images, the researchers studied the brain activity of them. The ones that played the violent video games had decreased brain activity when they were shown the violent images, Tiffany Kaiser states in her article “Study: Violent Video Games Desensitize Players, Cause Heightened Aggression.” Some researchers look at different areas rather than gun control or violence in the media and video games; they look at how the mental health of children can be apart of the school
After playing the game, the students were shown a 10-minute videotape of real-life violent acts...while their heart rate and galvanic skin response (both measures of arousal and stress) were measured. Students who had played one of the violent video games showed lower levels of arousal to the violent scenes. That is, 20 minutes of playing a violent video game desensitized them to images of real-life violence in the short term.” (Bennet, "Video Games Cause Aggressive and Violent Behavior in Youths." Discuss). Even though this experiment is about the affects of seeing violence; it is essentially the mental affects of the violence.

Many schools in today’s society suffer from shootings at some point while children are attending school. Shootings in schools are not a new occurrence, and America has dealt with multiple shootings in public schools in which the lives of many children and teachers have been undeservingly taken (Elliott 528). Imagine sitting in a desk when out of nowhere gunshots are heard. Panic strikes the classroom. The teacher begins to become flustered and ridden with fear as fellow students grab phones to reach out to others. Screams of sadness and despair are heard from the hallway while students and faculty run and hide without knowing if survival is an actual reality. The threshold level of a fellow student has finally been reached.

Since the Columbine High School shooting, school shootings have become a common occurrence. People have become so accustomed to seeing them on the news, so we hardly bat an eye at them anymore. Frankly, those thoughts and prayers are simply not enough anymore. The Parkland shooting is one of many school shootings, that have brought light to the subject of gun violence in schools, and it is clear, if it hasn’t been one already, that gun regulation needs to change.
