Through the last couple of years, there have been over 400 people shot and dead in over 200 school shootings. Now just a few days ago the Governor of Florida, along with budget committees and part of the public attended a press conference that was held at Miami-Dade police headquarters in Doral, Florida. During this press conference gun control bills, programs to arm teachers and laws were discussed. There were many proposals made that my family and I would not agree with. The aim of this paper is to speak of the effects of having new legislation in the U.S. and the proposals made during the press conference. This paper will also touch on my opinion along with my family’s and how we can solve gun control in America. To begin with, …show more content…
Linda Schulman, the mother of Scott Beigel, a geography teacher that was killed during the last major school shooting, told lawmakers her son had become a teacher to teach, not “to be a law enforcement officer.” “If teachers were allowed to carry weapons in school, it could easily cause more chaos and fatalities,” she added. And she's not the only one who agrees on this. Most school shootings happen from inside the school such as threw staff or people who have a connection with the staff. For this reason, if teachers were allowed to have concealed weapons, it would cause havoc in schools and might increase problems instead of decreasing …show more content…
A partial amount of my family would agree with me meanwhile another amount strongly disagrees. The majority of people who begin school shootings are in a condition or is not getting help but gun control laws are not reducing crimes committed with them but gun ownership is. Instead of completely banning guns or concealed weapons from anybody who has no reason to have a gun they should restrict it from people who are not capable of the responsibility of carrying a concealed weapon. In order to buy a gun, it should be mandatory to provide a medical record signed by a doctor along with their identification and if the medical record shows any signs in which might show that this person is incapable of the weapon, they should not allow them to buy it. Weapons are not only used for bad but are used by people across the world for many things. Gun control laws are against the right to self-defense and the feeling of safety along the right to own guns for recreational
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Mass shootings have been a major issue in this country. One common place these shootings take place is on school grounds. These events keep happening with really no solution to put an end to these tragedies. Recently, a bill had been proposed in Wisconsin that would lift the ban on guns in campus buildings in UW schools. This means more guns on campus.
“Most gun owners are responsible, law-abiding citizens. They believe in handling guns safely, being trained to use guns appropriately, and following the law, however much they may disagree with gun-control laws” (Bjorklund 25). “ Mike Pence, a Republican congressman from Indiana [now Vice President], stated, I maintain that firearms in the hands of law-abiding citizens makes communities safer, not less safe” (Bjorklund 30). This is a perfect reason why teachers with special training should be able to carry
Problem/Issue Overview: The whole gun control issue has been a highly controversial problem in the U.S for the past couple of decades. From store robberies to school shootings when violence and guns come together the issue does not end well. The nation should act stricter on gun laws and become more aware of the outcome of allowing students to walk around with firearms on campus. The Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Virginia Tech shootings demonstrate the tragedies guns on campus lead to.
To start, Robert Runcie indicated that teachers need to be armed “with more money in their pocket.” (qtd. in Balingit) Teachers need more money so that they can provide for regular classroom items that their students might not have. Some school districts are poor and not well-funded, so teachers have to buy classroom items if they want their students to have them. If school districts have the extra money to pay for teachers to go to training to carry a gun, if they have the money to pay for gun safes, if they have the money to pay for the guns and ammunition, then they most definitely have the extra money to give to teachers for classroom objects.
The problem with gun violence in schools has existed for years, and something should be done to eliminate the problem that endangers students who attend schools every day. One recent incident with gun violence in schools occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School where several young children were killed and many others injured (Elliott 529). Also, a bombing incident in 1927 killed thirty-seven children and was likely the start of school gun violence (Elliott 529). Children, who attend schools, sometimes do not feel safe because of the problem with gun
School systems are notorious for ignoring symptoms of a potential shooter. “98 percent of the attackers experienced or perceived a major loss prior to the attack, 78 percent of attackers had a history of suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts prior to their attack, 71 percent of attackers felt persecuted, bullied, threatened, attacked, or injured by others prior to the incident (in several cases that harassment was described as long-standing and severe)”(The U.S. School, Winn). If the government follows through on the plan of arming teachers, it would only make the potential shooters feel worse. That in turn could mean more shootings for feeling neglected. Guns on teacher aren’t only threatening to teachers, but it is also threatening to students who experienced abuse.
One of the most controversial issues our nation faces today is gun control laws. This controversy has been created due to the different interpretations of the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution which states the right of citizens to bear arms; “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Cornell Law School). Anti-gun control laws believe that the amendment guarantees the right to bear any kind of firearms. On the other hand, we have does that believe that more controls laws should be implemented since the 2nd amendment was for the right of States to have an armed militia during wartime. Both sides have strong point, however, the safety of our children comes first, and a firearm means death in the wrong hands.
Strict regulations and limitations have been pursued already and clearly do not suffice. Statics brought to attention by gun control opponents, show that gun control laws have done little to reduce crime rates. Several restrictions have been made on certain guns, considered as overly dangerous, though in the hands of an unstable criminal even a legal hunting gun can be deadly. Countless restrictions have been made, however people have still found ways around them. If people are unstable and determined enough, they will find a gun, regardless of the restrictions or regulations.
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
Allowing teachers to carry guns in school will not necessarily make school safer. There is always the possibility of a gun being found by a student and used inappropriately. Not to mention the fact that armed teachers who have taken a seminar or two are not trained officers; in a tense situation, they might make a fatal mistake. We don 't need more guns in schools. We need more empathy and compassion.
Everyday in the United States, ninety families are changed forever; guns claim an average of ninety lives every day in the United States, 33,000 lives in a single year. Gun control has been a debate in the United States for many years and is constantly thrusted back into the public’s attention by horrific shootings. These shootings constantly cause individuals to petition the government to place stricter and stricter regulations of guns. However, these policies cannot be the solution to this problem. To determine a solution that will be both effective and constitutional, we must look at statistics and research that has been conducted to determine the best course of action.
Problem Solution Paper 95% of people think that america needs stricter gun control laws, yet the amount of shootings in the past years has risen exponentially. Gun violence is a serious problem and the people of the United States have wanted to solve this problem this for a long time. If people feel scared to go to school (which should be a safe learning environment for all children and all ages) that is a problem, and it needs to be solved, or at the very least put in barriers to deal with the mental disabilities and amount of guns associated with this problem. There has been an exponential rise in shootings in America since the 20th century. In the 20th century there were 226 shootings, in the first 18 years of the 21st century there have been 211 shootings.
Of course, not all teachers have guns, but if they already have a concealed carry license, which is nearly impossible to obtain in our state, they should be able to carry on school grounds just like anywhere else since they’ve already received the necessary training. The point is that if we try to lessen the number of guns as several people advocate for we will actually lessen safety because the criminals will still be able to acquire their guns illegally leaving innocent people exposed and not able to defend
The mass shooting tragedies in Florida schools created a ripple about the popular and controversial debate about gun control. America should have more gun control laws, as they can help save dozens, hundreds, maybe even thousands of victims. Advantages of these gun restrictions are the decrease of gun-related murders, more thorough background checks to prevent giving guns to criminals or people with mental illnesses and the prohibition of high-capacity magazines. Nonetheless, the other side of the coin is education about guns should have a higher priority rather than actual gun control, as they do not prevent illegal possession of guns or one 's lower feeling of security. There should be additional gun control in America.
