I wish you the very best. I am writing to you to talk about the issue of gun control in the U.S. today, it is a serious issue that I know you are working hard to fix. My purpose in writing this letter to you is to tell you how I feel about the issue, and maybe give you some help in figuring out this terrible situation we are in the U.S.
Schools practice safety drills for emergencies, even though school shootings are very rare. While many may believe that teachers are the best protection, there is plenty of protection in the classroom in case of an
When it all comes down to the use of guns, or any weapon against another, there is always three issues that most come across: do I actually have the nerve to go through with it, can I do this and be okay mentally, and can I truly put others lives before mine? These questions, these logical thoughts, are frankly the most important aspects to using any weapon against another. Even if it is in the intent to protect another, you still must consider these facets before doing anything that could bring more harm to others than aid. In relation to this, it shows that these same ideals process through teacher’s, as well as any adult’s, mind frame. Trusting someone not certified and trained thoroughly for an immense period of time with a weapon to protect young children and other adults would be putting the kids and the protector at risk. It’s better to not leave it all up to chance and to stick with the public service of law enforcement, certified protectors, who can truly handle the job.
Would you want to live in fear? Especially at a place that you feel safe. A place that you are required to go to by law. A place that children roam the hallways, learning and having fun. Can you imagine, going to this place every day, until one. Someone bursts through the school, into the cafeteria, the library, an auditorium, or even in a classroom. Every day the threat looms over us. Haunting us with its increasing numbers. We live in fear of a school shooter. And I will not stand for it. Will You? In 2018, there have been 8 school shootings. 8. That is a staggering number. The total body count is unbelievable for just 2018 alone. Ridiculous. How have we not done anything about this? How have we not increased our gun control laws after Florida.
Many people from both the Republican and Democratic parties favor the idea of placing a ban on assault weapons and creating a new federal database to monitor gun sales as well as having background checks for private and gun show sales (Struyk, 1). Other possible safety measures include every school having a professional crisis team that can review their existing policies, staff members who question every visitor who comes into the school, constant locked doors, and more frequent safety drills (Gumbrecht, 1). Since the Columbine shooting of 1999, even architectural designs have been implemented to ensure school safety. Schools that have been built since then try to have single, prominent entryways, reduced landscaping which means fewer places for the shooter to hide, restrooms away from entrances, and mechanical and electrical systems away from easy access points (Gumbrecht, 2). Construction companies have been trying to create something to make it so that the accident is contained, whether it be a shooting or an explosion (Gumbrecht, 2).
Since 2012 there have been around 170 school shootings around the US. December 14 was the massacre of 20 children ranging from the age of 7-8. Many of the teachers on campus did not have a weapon with them and
The chances of being involved in a school shooting are slim to none and they have only happened in a select few schools (Chuck). It is just very unlikely to happen. “How about training in violence prevention, or all of the other threats that schools face, like severe weather, noncustodial parent fights, and bus accidents?" (Chuck), Training for these situations will do much more help in the long run than to spend all this money and time to protect students from a situation that is highly unlikely. Teachers simply aren't trained enough to actually be able to help the students in these situations.
Also, Teachers should carry handguns because it is their right. Steve Siebold an expert in the field of critical and mental toughness training reported to Every Teacher in America Should Have a Gun that, “But until that happens, critical thinking suggests that we all exercise our second amendment rights, arm our teachers and school officials to ensure the safety of our children, voice our support and keep a close eye on anti-gun crusaders who want to make our decisions for us”(Siebold). It is our right in the second amendment that we can have a weapon and we need to use that
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
This should not be a worry for the child or parents but it has to be because at this point any school is a threat. So a possible factor in decreasing shootings is arming teachers, by doing this teachers can fight back instead of shielding or running from the shooter. Reason #2 teachers can defend their students by changing this law and using correct training teachers should be able to carry a weapon. By doing this not only insure safety it will give relief for parents all over the country. This tactic will give school staffs a chance to outnumber a possible shooter.
Hypothetically, a law is passed stating that teachers are allowed to carry guns in school. In a sick twisted world, the teacher becomes the school shooter. Your student is in class and their teacher pulls out their government funded school weapon and starts shooting. How is your child supposed to protect themselves if the approved district teacher starts shooting the students with a malicious intent. Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school.
The carnage at Columbine alarmed hundreds of schools across the nation and influenced schools safety practices greatly. In this present era, school shootings appear to be becoming normality in America. After the shooting, schools both locally and internationally have significantly increased their security procedures. There are many different upgrades that schools have implemented to help prevent further tragedies; metal detectors are used to detect weaponry on-hand as well as security cameras on site all around the building – inside and out. These methods also include dress codes, security/police officials and ID room cards, the latter being implemented on my campus. If one were to access the necessity of metal detectors, it would come with
Teachers could feel more comfortable in their classrooms if they knew they could protect themselves and their students from violent threats. Schools being a gun free zone are a target for violent
Over the years, school safety has become more of an issue in the United States. Many have argued over the possible solutions for school safety. But through all the others, the only feasible solution is the use of metal detectors. Metal detectors have been known to increase safety when placed in an area that could be threatened. Metal detectors can protect schools from violence, especially from school shootings. To end the violence, metal detectors should be placed in every public school across America to ensure the safety of the school 's students and staff.
In the past and present, school safety is one of the number one priorities of any school district. Having a safe and secure learning environment is crucial in getting children of any age the education that they need and deserve. When this security is threatened it can be either directly, for the victims of school shootings, or indirectly, for the students that hear about these incidents and no longer feel as safe when they are in their school. When a tragic event happens like what recently happened in Florida, there will be an argument and as with any argument, there will be many sides. Some ideas for school safety that have come out of this incident include, gun control laws, mental health screenings, and things that can be done in schools to control the situation of having an active shooter.
