There is no doubt that socialization has an effect on an individual’s way of life. Elkin & Handel (1978) define socialization as the process by which we learn the ways of a given society or social group so that we can function within it. Consequently, socialization is a lifelong process of learning to become a member of the social world, beginning at birth and continuing until death (Ballantine & Roberts, 2014). As children grow they develop in many ways. Development is not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. The school is importance for the transmission of wealthy information and knowledge that further develop the child’s cognitive, psychomotor and attitude skills. The school is a place of mass socialization in which the impacts are seen in areas within the classroom boundaries, outside of the classroom and through extra-curricular activities. The impacts of school on a child includes learning skills to relate to different personality types, self-control development, negotiation skills, arguments and resolutions ability, and even reinforces the concept that actions and choices have consequences (Adams, 2011). These impacts greatly shape the child in a positive manner so as to cope and socialize with other social agents easily. Education widens the mental horizons of pupils and teaches them new ways of looking at themselves and their society. Ultimately the formal education trains them to confirm to society’s norm and to accept the roles and status that society will confer upon them when they have finished their schooling. I can attest to these two agents for it has shaped the person I am today. A child spends majority of his time at school occupied with the activities of education and sharing behaviours with his peers. The family then in turn provides the basic needs for their development and offers their cultural and religious values. School lets the child meets different socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures in which prepare him to handle (Pearson & Media, N.d). If he suffers from low self-esteem or struggles to fit in school, then it is suggested he might avoid social institutions in the future. They spend the whole day at school keeping the student busy without allowing them to think or use their brains at all. The students have information thrown at them too fast to process and are distracted from thinking and doing anything that stimulates their brain. This version of school either leaves people exhausted or in need of activity to use the energy and thoughts that are wasted during school.
Explain how the ethos, mission, aims and values of a school may be reflected in working practices. The ethos, mission, aims and values of the school should be known very well before entering the school setting as it is part and parcel of the environment of the school and the daily practice of the staff and pupils there. All adults that work and are part of setting have the responsibility to model the standards of behaviour, with the children and amongst the colleagues. Good association and strong dealings between adults will encourage the good behaviour in children. All children as an individual should be respected within the school.
