Here in the Philippines, there’s a huge competition among the universities. Everyone wants to be the top university and be considered as the best. Some schools consider their rank in exams like board exam, licensure exam, bar exam and other tests to be the only standard of evaluation. Let’s just say that you passed the board exam and you got the highest score among the other students who took the exam. There’s a possibility that you only got it by luck or you just cheated. Then how will you consider that as a true basis of a school’s competency? I’m not saying that the other schools teaches their students to cheat but what if the student was really desperate to pass? He got no other choice but to cheat. That’s why a test score can never be an indicator of a school’s competency. These standardized tests only shows that a student has a good memory that’s why he/she was able to answer it correctly. This scores only shows that you can easily remember important facts. For an example, take a vocabulary test. At first you memorize the word, its spelling and even its definition, but later on, you will forget how to use these words in its correct context. So that’s how it works. Another thing is a standardized test only tests a student’s abilities on a particular day. There is a Problem with Standardized Testing In today’s education department, the success of a student is determined by their ability to excel on a standardized test. However, society is starting to debate whether standardized tests should actually determine whether a student passes to the next level. In both Anaya Kamenetz’s book and TV documentary, The Test: Why Our Schools Are Obsessed with Standardized Testing but You Don’t Have to Be, she describes problems in within the school system, ultimately leading the corruption and mistrust of the school system. A 2001 study conducted by the Brookings Institution found that 50%-80% of year-over-year test score improvements were simply "fluctuations that had nothing to do with long-term changes in learning". Standardized testing doesn't tell really help colleges who is better prepared and who isn't. Because of this, students that might actually be better equipped for college might slip through the cracks, not even considered because the standardized test proved an unfair barrier. I feel that the test cannot measure our creativity, our intuitive ability, nor our critical thinking, among many qualities that can define a truly worthy student.
There have been an increasing number of students who are misrepresented by a single score, yet academically succeed in college nonetheless. That is the primary reason why standardized tests should not be as highly regarded as other factors such as high-school GPA.
Education has had some form of high stakes testing for many years, the SAT, ACT, AP, and so on. Testing in this form was used to measure how much a student had learned and retained over the course of a student’s education. However, over time the testing focus changed. High stakes testing morphed from a useful tool that gauges achievement to becoming the primary focus in education. The focus is no longer about what the child has achieved, instead the emphasis is on achieving top scores.
Unfortunately, standardized testing only gives a rough estimate of what a student can do or knows. Educational companies that produce these tests are ordinarily doing it for profit, the same tests are produced and used for the same things, evaluation of effectiveness of teachings on students, performance of teachers, classes, how well schools are doing overall, rather than individual tests and observation methods for different categories. These companies are more in the business for the financial aspect and acquisition they would earn from this, rather than enriching the minds of the new generation. The standardized tests do not provide any ways for students to improve and develop off of their test results. There is a doctor, Thomas Armstrong, that focuses on youth development, and he believes that standardized tests don’t help or let anyone, whether it’s teachers or students, improve. He wrote that “Standardized tests don’t provide any feedback on how to perform better. The results aren’t even given back to the teachers and students until months later, and there are no instructions provided by test companies on how to improve these test scores” (Armstrong). Since the test companies of standardized tests don’t give feedback to teachers and students, it is impossible for them to know what they need to work and improve upon. If students can’t improve their scores, they are stuck either staying in the same spot or downgrading in the education system.
In a way this is some colleges cheating in ranking and on grades. Sometimes it’s not really about the grades, but the knowledge that students are able to bring with them and apply it to their future job. Colleges are supposed to prep students for the world ahead of them and help
