Here in the Philippines, there’s a huge competition among the universities. Everyone wants to be the top university and be considered as the best. Some schools consider their rank in exams like board exam, licensure exam, bar exam and other tests to be the only standard of evaluation. But the question is, are test scores a good indication of a school’s capability? Some theory suggests that a test score will never be the basis of their aptitude. However, there are still people who base their choice of school to the ranking of a certain university. Let’s just say that you passed the board exam and you got the highest score among the other students who took the exam. There’s a possibility that you only got it by luck or you just cheated. Then how will you consider that as a true basis of a school’s competency? I’m not saying that the other schools teaches their students to cheat but what if the student was really desperate to pass? He got no other choice but to cheat. That’s why a test score can never be an indicator of a school’s competency. These standardized tests only shows that a student has a good memory that’s why he/she was able to answer it correctly. This scores only shows that you can easily remember important facts. For an example, take a vocabulary test. At first you memorize the word, its spelling and even its definition, but later on, you will forget how to use these words in its correct context. So that’s how it works. Another thing is a standardized test only tests a student’s abilities on a particular day. To sum things up, test scores are not the only thing to indicate a school’s evaluation. Yes, there are some people who base their choices to the school’s assessment but test scores are just a reflection of your everyday study. If you got high score in an exam, it just means that you study hard and was able to answer the questions correctly. Test scores aren’t what count.
