Green Business I chose to use Sears and Kmart, also referred to as Sears Holdings, as my company for this Green Business lab paper. Sears Holdings is a combination of both the Sears store and Kmart. As of January 2017, Sears, “full-line stores included 670 stores located across all 50 states and Puerto Rico” one of those 670 stores is right here in Augusta, GA (Reuters.com). In January 2017, the Kmart branch has “operated 735 Kmart stores across 49 states, Guam, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands” (Reuters.com). Unfortunately, the Augusta, GA store closed its doors in 2016. Sears Holdings has many environmental sustainability initiatives for all their stores. For instance, they are working on conserving energy. In 2015, Sears won the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award “in both retail and energy management categories” (Searsholdings.com). They did this by using the SHC Energy Team that “tracks energy usage at various retail locations and distribution centers by using data metrics from several various sources” (Barnes, 2015). Sears Holdings also encourages its workers to conserve energy by having them consider their stores to be like their homes. …show more content…
By creating this program Sears Holdings became “the first broad line relater to join the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) program in 2007” (Searsholdings.com). This program allows stores to haul away and appropriately dispose of their members old appliances and household utensils. Furthermore, “this means SHC recovers and properly disposes of the ozone-depleting chemicals from the discarded appliances, reducing CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases”
Across the United States, Mexico, and Canada these two giants have industrialized characteristic strategic priorities, and brand images. The business we chose to focus our project on is Publix Supermarkets. On Sept. 6, 1930, founder George Jenkins opened his first store, called Publix Food Store, in Winter Haven Florida. Today Publix has grown to be Florida’s largest employer with 168,500 employees and run 1,080 stores. Total sales in 2013 were 28.9 billion, relatively large for a regional corporation. Their mission statement is “To be the premier food quality retailer in the world,” and they’re doing an excellent job at it.
“Our customers trust that the products we bring to market are sourced from reputable suppliers who provide safe and fair working conditions for their workers. Kroger is working to ensure an ethical supply chain for the products sold in our stores (Kroger).” They plan to have 100% sustainable seafood, cage-free eggs, and sourced palm-oil. Kroger wants to not only meet but exceed the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Zero Waste” policies. It also plans to improve transportation efficiency.
Olsson’s article “Up Against Walt-Mart” is an investigative reporting. Wal-Mart say “We Sell for Less” and “Everyday Low Prices”. The company’s website that I chose to analyze, in lieu of their mission statement, is Safeway Inc. A little background: This company was essentially founded in 1915 by M.B. Skaggs, who bought a grocery store from his father. By 1926, Skaggs had become very successful with his stores and merged with Safeway to become Safeway, Inc. In January 2015, AB Acquisition LLC (parent company of Albertson’s) merged with Safeway to create one of the largest food and drug retailers in the country – over 2,200 stores in 33 states, specifically with Safeway stores in 19 states (Safeway Inc., 2008-2016).
Additionally to the energy reduction, the company is mainly focusing on minimizing the greenhouse gases, which was particularly scaled down by 3.8% since 2014 and replaced their 1886 vehicles by newer eco-friendlier models (Rogers Communications Inc., 2016, p. 41-45). Furthermore, to support water reduction initiatives, high-efficiency water fixtures and appliances were installed in the facilities (Rogers Communications Inc., 2016, p. 48). ‘Is Wal-Mart Good for America?’ On PBS Frontline, May 11, 2015 ‘Is Wal-Mart Good for America?’ is a documentary that examines the relationship between Wal-Mart’s rapid growth and its impact on the US economy ever since it blossomed in trade productivity in the mid 20th century. The documentary, published on February 2014 by PBS Frontline, conveys a deep understanding of how Wal-Mart changed the living standards of many Americans and took consumerism and retail logistics in the U.S. to another level; by cutting costs through offshore outsourcing to China and employing cheap Chinese labor. The documentary focuses on the changing relationship between big retailers and manufacturers and the transition in pricing and decision-making.
