According to Langdon Gilkey, an American Protestant Ecumenical theologian, secularism is “the cultural Geitst within which all forms of thought, including the theological, must operate if they are to be relevant and creative”(64). Gilkey continues to say that secularism exists on presuppositions level and so expressed in different forms of a given culture’s life, and thereby not an easy thing to characterize briefly (Gilkey 64). This is true especially when one attempts to define the meaning of secularism in a place like India, a land of multiple cultures and religions. Secularism seems “incongruous” as Badrinath Rao, a professor in Sociology and Asian Studies, rightly asserts (47). It has multifaceted expressions and it means different things …show more content…
This seems to mean that the State gives all religions and cultures equal importance, status and treatment. It is a privilege like in a secular state like India where every citizen has the Constitutional Right to follow, to practice and spread the religion of our choice as it is described in Articles 25, 26, 27 and 28 of Indian constitution. Therefore, be it Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, etc...all religions in India are of equal values and significance to the making of an integrated and progressive India. In other words, the state cannot establish or promote any particular religion in India. Rather, it should ensure equality of all her citizen in every walk of …show more content…
It is in the way we respect one another. It is in the way we value each other’s differences. It is in treating one another as brothers and sisters of the same soil. It is in foregoing one’s own preferences. It is in letting go of our selfishness and considering others better than ourselves. It is in doing away our suspicions, hypocrisies, prejudices and intolerances. It is in treating all creation with respect and dignity whether black or white humans, from the South or the North, Tribals or Brahmins, animals or plants. It is about celebrating unity in diversity. It is about celebrating all God’s creation. Where do we find these principles? It is in the Christian Bible. It seems clear to me that a true Christian believer, who believes in the Triune Creator of the world, is one with a spirit of secularism, but never a racist, celebrating different race, culture and religion. The Bible as the revelation of God assists Christian believers to live out what it means to have a “faith seeking understanding” that reflects the secular consciousness and relevant to the every day’s experience of a diverse community in India. Lesslie Newbigin is right when he says that, “In India...it needs Christians to keep the secular state truly secular”(76). Christians must take this as opportunity and recognize “the possibility of
The final step, he calls is mutual differentiation, “an acknowledgment of interdependence that takes into account various group identities. The idea is not that everyone needs to be the same, but the members of different groups respect members of other groups. ”(St. John's
A Blend Religion Sikhism is monotheistic religion that is blends of Islam and Hinduism; Guru Nanak founded this religion in fifteen century. Sikhism has clear thought about remembering god all the time, equality between human kinds. Because Sikhism is a mixture religion, it has many similarities with Hinduism and Islam, and also it has many differences with them. Sikhism has bunch of similarities with Islam because it has influenced by Islamic rules. First, both believe in monotheistic god, which mean believe in one god.
Religions with common geographic origins have been known to share codes of behavior, views of nature, and reasons for existence. Three great geographic center of religious origins included Southwestern Asia, where Islam, Judaism, and Christianity originated. Also, East Asia, where Confucianism and Taoism originated, and South Asia, which included Hinduism and Buddhism. Religions associated with South West Asia center on a single supreme authority and seem to be less flexible when it comes to interpretation of religion. Religions associated with South Asia and East Asia appear to be more philosophical and focus on relationships with nature and are more flexible when it comes to interpretation.
What impact has Secularism and ‘New Age’ religions in Australia had on the Australian religious Landscape? Overview: With secularism present within the Australian constitution, religion is faced with the threat of fading into oblivion. Secularism is the principle of separation of religious institutions and state. This has allowed for a rapid increase of irreligious Australians and non catholic religions. With the modernisation of Australian society, new age religions have arisen.
Patel wants everyone to embrace the many different religions that we have while believing that they all can coexist in the community “I realized that it was precisely because of America’s glaring imperfections that I should seek to participate in its progress, carve a place in its promise, and play a role in its possibility. And at its heart and at its best, America was about pluralism” (Patel 89). Patel says that pluralism should be embraced and individuals should have a better understanding of one’s religion before mistaking. These mistakes can lead to disputes and ultimately to pandemonium characterized in this text.
In 1991, the economy slipped into a recession. Unemployment increased as the average income stagnated. The majority of the public felt unease about America’s future. President Bush seemed to ignore ordinary Americans’. The Republican Party attacked gays, feminists, and abortion rights advocates.
Response Paper 5: Religious Reform Since the fall of the Roman empire, the Catholic church had a reputation for being stable. This gave people a sense of security and made them believe that whatever the Catholic church did, was what God wanted done. Then, in 1378 the Catholic church had three popes, because its rulers were so despite for power, that neither one of them refused to give up the papacy. This greed slowly trickled down to every level of the Catholic church.
The connections of cultures and ideas through religion can be best explained by using Robert Bellah’s interpretation of civil religion.
The Marāthās, in particular, became so enraged that they eventually gained their independence from the Mughals and established their own empire,” (Gale). The departure of the Marāthās proves the lack of religious tolerance the Mughals had at times. The Marāthās were so enraged at the lack of acceptance that they left the empire rendering it smaller and weaker. This is just one example of the Mughals not only only neglecting to practice religious tolerance, but how refusing to accept all people for their beliefs backfired in the empire’s overall growth and unity.
But actually, it is a very brilliant and basic principle to uphold. If a person were to go around being formidable and uncivil, most likely they would not receive any kind of positive attention from anyone but people just as discourteous as they are. Another phrase that seems redundant is “You must learn to love yourself before you can love others.” That is another good principle that is often taken for granted ad nauseum. In Native American culture, you must love yourself and everything else in creation to truly achieve wicozani which means wealth by living a life in mental and physical harmony with the world.
In addition, Nehru explained that Muslims “are of us and will remain of us whatever happens” (Document 2). Not only did Gandhi help to achieve what each religion wanted, but did so while himself and Nehru encouraged Hindus and Muslims to remain
Also, it is important that we learn to respect ourselves as people and never do anything which we believe is inappropriate. We have to respect other cultures if we want others to respect ours. Lastly, we must understand that sometimes we have to change some features of our culture to give chance to new and fairer
Religion in Western civilization has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in shaping and developing Western society.
