The dispute occurred because these two countries at the same time claim that the Senkaku Island belongs to them. Senkaku islands are islands covering an area of 7 km2 located on the 175km of the northern island of Ishigaki (Okinawa prefecture), 190 km northeast of Taiwan and 420 km from the east of mainland China. Therefore China is maintaining the island because it is an island of their ancestors. In addition to historical factors, the seizure was based by the national interests of each country. Senkaku Island is a country that is very rich in natural resources and potentially in many ways. Natural resources are owned by the Senkaku Island is gas, oil and also various kinds of fish. Before anyone exposing natural resources of Senkaku, no one fighting over this island, but after being exposed its natural wealth of this island then contested between Japan and China. In addition to favorable economic Senkaku could also benefit in the field of defense, since according to the two countries this island could be the place for the military defense China against Japan. Making Canada great Again From 1942-1949 the Canadian government was responsible for the cruel internment of Japanese citizens in Canada. Ever since the first sailor Manzo-Nagano arrived in New Westminster, BC Japanese have experienced prejudice. Early BC settlers were extremely conscious of there ethnic origin and were extremely concerned with the racial origins of immigrants, they became obsessed with eliminating “undesirables” and as a result passed laws preventing them from voting, working in mines and other government funded projects.
They wanted more land and they took what they wanted.apan needed natural resources like oil, steel and iron. As shown in document (D) the U.S had cut Japan off of 80% of their oil. Oil that they needed to fuel their boats to move other resources in and out of Japan.
Japanese in a country in North-east Asian, and it stretches for 1200 miles crescent in the Pacific Ocean. Japan is rich with volcanoes and hot springs, and it is also deal with earthquakes and tidal waves. However, today, Japan has high economic growth, and became a world economic powerhouse. The annexation of the Hawaiian islands was not supported by the natives, but it by many powerful and rich foreigners. In secret, they formed a committee and plotted to overthrow the monarchy. To quell any uprisings, they solicited the aid of the United States Marines, since they did not possess enough power to stop it themselves. With Queen Liliuokalani out of office, they were one step closer to their goal of annexation. The US was not totally innocent when it comes to the annexation of Hawaii.
In a letter from the U.S. Ambassador in Japan to the Secretary of State, the U.S Ambassador mentions notably the poor internal economic and financial situation of Japan along with the unsuccessful attempts to obtain loans from England, France, and Holland. The Ambassador also mentions the steady increase of stress in the Government and the mention of a hot-headed military that doesn't want to face the horrible facts (Doc H). Due to the fact that the U.S. Ambassador is in Japan his point of view on Japan’s situation is first hand and can see the effects of the deprivement of resources Japan is going through. In past history many countries had taken an imperialist mindset and when in the need for resources they would take over other countries for their resources. So keeping in mind the United States power, Japan’s want for the same power, and Japan’s “hotheaded military”, Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor could have been to take resources from the U.S. as well as weaken them for possibly taking their power.
Access to these countries also gave the U.S. access to China. Hawaii became a strategic base for Americans once
The following events caused the tensions to raise between Japan and The United States of America which led up to the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Internment of Japanese Americans. They are the Rape of Nanking and the sudden stop of U.S exports to Japan. In the 1930s Japan, had become very nationalistic, militaristic, and desired for more land to expand the population. So, Japan went to China and conquered Manchuria, Northern China, then most of China, and eventually Southeast Asia. This help Japan get out of its economic crisis but soon a very tragic and horrendous even took place.
To protest, “Japan 's activities in China, Roosevelt had put an embargo on the export of aviation fuel and iron ore to Japan, and had frozen all Japanese assets in the United States” (“Could Pearl Harbor Have Been Averted?”). The Japanese were vulnerable without American materials of oil and metal (80% of Japanese oil and metal were from America). Prince Konoye, Prime Minister of Japan, wished for a meeting in Hawaii with President Roosevelt to resolve their conflicts with one another.
If this island suddenly chose to become independent, everything would change
One reason was the fact that the United States began an embargo on Japan, ending the trade of Japanese weapons. This limited Japan from obtaining more resources in their expansion. Another reason was that Japan needed oil to help keep expanding and raise their economy. The U.S. Navy was in their way, by controlling the Philippines, which is why they thought they needed to get rid of them. Lastly, both Japan and the U.S. did not agree on each other’s ways of running government.
The United States and Japan fought in World War II during 1941 to 1945. Japan planned to expand their land and gain resources- which led them to invade China whom was an ally of the U.S. In result, the United States cut off the supply of oil to Japan. On December 7th 1941, Japan’s air force did a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor because that is where their military base is located.
Throughout this period there was also tension between China, Russia and Japan over the control of Korea, for its natural resources and for its strategic position. With Growing political tension between nations, a treaty was formed between Japan and China in 1885; this treaty gave China the political control over Korea. This treaty stood until 1894 when Japan demanded the control of Korea. This lead to the Sino-Japanese war (1894-1895). (University of North Carolina
Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panama are all on the list of island the U.S are interested in From the evidence shown above this shows that imperialism is not the best option. Although it could lead to the spreading of U.S commerce it does not follow our constitution, it could lead to tyrant like behavior, and could lead to conflicts with other countries that might also be imperialist
The Philippines were in-between Japan and their potential oil supply,(DOC B). A possible and smart tactic for Japan would to attack Pearl Harbor and while the fleet is weak, take over the Philippines. Once Japan had acquired the Philippines they would have a base to take over many nations that have large oil amounts. A major factor as to why Pearl Harbor was attacked was that the Americans were cutting Japan off from their oil supply. Japan, as an island nation, had very few natural resources and were very dependant on the American oil.
The Europeans landed on Rēkohu and demanded the island for Britain’s King George III. They changed the name of the Island as Chatham Island, it is named after the ship. Prior to colonization, Moriori was free and self-determining tribe. The Moriori were pushed to the economic and political margins.
