Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Situational Analysis Self- concept and self- esteem are two psychological terms that are very important and commonly used interchangeably. Self -concept or self -image is the sum total of all the knowledge and information you have about yourself. It includes things like your gender, name, personality, physical appearance, race, likes and dislikes, beliefs, values, social history, nationality, schooling, family, career, accomplishments, failures, skills and talents. Your self-concept also includes who you think you might become and what you believe you were like in the past. At first one’s self- concept is very general and changeable as we grow older, these self- perceptions become much more organized, detailed and specific(Pastrorino&Doyle-Portillo, 2013). A self- concept is a collection of beliefs about one’s own nature, unique, qualities, and typical behavior. Your self- concept is your mental picture of yourself. It is a collection of self- perceptions ( Weiten, Dunn, & Hammer, 2012). The importance of self- concepts which influences people’s behaviours and cognitive and emotional outcomes like achievements, level of happiness, anxiety, social integration, self- esteem, and life satisfaction. It is how you evaluate and view yourself. It is linked to your self-esteem, which is linked to your feelings of self- worth (Fiero, 2011). Self-esteem is used to describe a person’s overall sense of self- worth or personal value. It is often seen as a personality trait, which means that it tends to be stable and enduring. It affects your behavior and thoughts. It changes how and what you feel about yourself. It also can affect your thinking, your confidence, self-image and happiness. Filipinos are very religious people. We believe in bible says, and we tend to follow the words of God. Nowadays, we have the law to protect our equality and human rights but in the case of LGBT Filipinos are having a problem with this matter. LGBT arenot totally accepted in the Philippines and they having a hard time to express themselves. They are also a human and they want to have the right also of human being. But in social media, we can confirm that we have a lot of artists that a member of LGBT and we slowly considered them to be a part of us. According to Psychological Association of the Philippines (2011), called for an end to discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. The statement which cited global findings that lesbian, gay and bisexual orientations are “normal variants of human sexuality”, also confirmed that LGBT Filipinos struggle with stigma, prejudice and discrimination. Aside from bullying and harassment, the association said LGBT are often pigeonholed into limited roles and occupations outside of these assigned roles, they are expected to curb their identities and expressions “as conditions for their social acceptance and enjoyment of rights”, (Espina- Varona,
