He showed this when he left home to go fight the trojan war. During the trojan war he hid in a giant over sized wooden horse where he willing went straight towards the danger. Later him and his men went in for the kill and fought for 10 years. He also showed bravery while he face face to face with the cyclops. He protected his men before himself by make sure the cyclop would not interfere with their journey home.
Odysseus was trapped in Calypso Island for ten years and this made his son Telemachus to embark on a journey to find him after he learnt that he was not dead. The story is filled with mysterious and supernatural forces and happenings, but they still keep the characters going on in their expeditions. The Odyssey is an epic whereby the characters are developed
Driven by hunger, the men ignore his warnings to not feast on the cattle. The mutiny angers Helios who threatens to cease shining if he receives no payment. In the text it states, “The disobedience angers the sun god, who threatens to stop shining if payment is not made for his lost cattle” (p.g 937). To mollify Helios’ anger, Zeus sinks Odysseus’ ship. All the men die except for Odysseus.
Odysseus, who knew the wine would make the Cyclops sleepy, offered him “liquor to wash down your scraps of men” (256). This creative use of the wine made the Cyclops sleepy, and it gave Odysseus’ crew a chance to blind the Cyclops. Another demonstration of his guile is when he tricked the Cyclops who “stroked each ram” by belting himself onto the underside of the ram. If it wasn’t for Odysseus’ quick thinking, the men would’ve been eaten by the blind Cyclops, who checked every animate before letting it exit the cave. When I was younger, I always let my dog sleep on my bed at night; therefore, I would always blame the dog when I wet the bed.
The Odyssey, a story based on a great warrior who not just shows his mind but his faults. One fault being his pride. As of the day he went to fight the Trojan War, he was lost at sea for 20 years. Odysseus fought with smart and the hope of being able to defeat everyone in his path. One example of this is Odysseus built the trojan horse which helped him win the Trojan war.
This shows an act of foolishness as leader because he did not notify his men of the dangerous obstacle coming towards him, but just keeps put to leave his men to fend for themselves. An example of Odysseus’ arrogance is when Odysseus brags to Cyclops and yells out, “O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions? Puny am I, in a Caveman’s hands? How do you like the beating that we gave you…” (L. 390-392).
He didn’t tell his men what the Bag of Winds was. Odysseus’ men-thinking it was treasure-opened up the bag only to find wind, leading them farther away from Ithaca. He didn’t tell his men what Circe said about Helios cattle. So the men killed the cows for food. Odysseus was also irresponsible because he never told the truth and he disobeyed the gods.
After fighting 10 years in the trojan war, Odysseus begins his lengthy journey home. Odysseus ends up getting caught in a few rough spots on the way home, lives are lost and ships are wrecked. When he gets home he comes to find out suitors are trying to overtake his palace. Over the journey home a series of events occur where Odysseus deserves loyalty from his crew. Odysseus deserves loyalty from his crew because odysseus comes up with good ideas, gives his men good advice to follow, and saves his men from life threatening situations.
Gawain starts off the story very eager to lay down his life almost to the point of conceitedness. He also shows that he is honorable by taking his uncle's, King Arthur, place when Splendid challenged King Arthur's Court. Gawain also exhibited courage because there was a chance of death. Splendid the Green Knight thinks King Arthur's men might be phonies so he went to King Arthur’s court to challenge them. Splendid summoned King Arthur's men to cut off Splendid's head with the understanding that Splendid would get the opportunity to match Gawain's swing for swing a year and a day later.
One example from the text that shows odysseus does not have the incredible heroic trait of humility is found in book 101 the odyssey . in lines 416 -419 , odysseus says,”cyclops if ever mortal man inquires how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him odysseus, laetres son. whose homes on ithaca “ (384). odysseus wanted the cyclops to know who to credit for bringing him. his bragging almost cost him and his men their lives.
“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up” (“Thomas A. Edison“). This quotation by Thomas Edison illustrates that giving up will not get one anywhere; along with giving up is the loser’s way out. Edison inspirational quote also reveals that mental strength is necessary to endurance and. The soldiers never gave up, and they persevered to win the war with Odysseus as their leader. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Trojan War hero Odysseus exhibits perseverance in the ten years of war and leads his men on the long journey home.
He had thought of a fine revenge upon the officer who had referred to him and his fellows as mule drivers” (192). Henry’s intense desire for revenge is a moral flaw, but Crane leaves hope for Henry as he does not act on his hatred for the officer (192). Henry Fleming finally finds inner peace, and courage wins the war in his heart. Crane writes, “Yet the youth smiled, for he saw that the world was a world for him, though many discovered it to be made of oaths and walking sticks. He had rid himself of the red sickness of , battle” (232).
What makes a hero a hero? The ancient poem The Odyssey, written by the epic poet Homer, tells the story of a protagonist by the name of Odysseus and his travels home to Ithaca after being at war in the Battle of Troy for nine years. Odysseus encounters many challenges and obstacles through the many adventures that he faces on his way home as well as once finally arriving home, he has to face the challenge of finding a way to rid the suitors that pillage his kingdom in order to retrieve his position back as lord and husband to his wife, Penelope. As Odysseus had many challenging adventures, he displayed the qualities of cleverness, bravery, and vengeance. One quality that separates Odysseus from the many other heroes of his time is the ability
