The self is the ego or the knower and it experiences the world. Generally the self comes across 3states.The waker experiences the waking world. This waking world is called “jagrata Prapancha” in Sanskrit. This world is a manifestation of five gross elements (pancha)-Earth, water, air, fire and space .As it is in a manifested state these five elements creates the manifested world or better to say the sensation of the manifested world. Similarly in the dream state the mind experiences the dream world. This dream world is nothing but a manifestation of our conscious and subconscious thoughts in a jumbled up manner-as defined by Sigmund Freud. But again this is the manifestation of the same five elements that creates the world. The third state which is called Sushupti in Sanskrit is the state where the mind is completely void. It happens in a deep sleep. When we wake up we have no idea of the time we slept. In this state the mind receives no signal and hence interpretes nothing. The Upanishad calls for a fourth element-the turiyam. It simply means “The fourth”. The idea is that we can’t explain this fourth by our material mind and just represent it symbolically. But this fourth state is the real me.It has been present in rest 3 states but its none of the three states mentioned. For example a golden bangle or a necklace or a bracelet all is gold but real gold is none of it. This

These are not stored in the physical brain, however, it is in the mind, which is a world on its own. One part of the mind is not more awake than the other . The subconscious occupies up 50-60% of the mind, the conscious 10%, and the unconscious 30-40%. The mind is a world of thought, belief and feelings. He yearns for a fresh beginning.
The three gems discussed in chapter 2 are Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. If the goal is to bring meaning to these terms that were previously meaningless to someone on the street, it is essential that you introduce them in a way that one can relate to. I accomplish this through presenting situations that occur everyday. Buddha is referred to as the awakened one. A Buddha is a person who wakes up and understands, someone who is enlightened.
According to the spiritual traditions of India, not knowing your identity is the basic cause of suffering. The Greeks also thought the same and that may be the reason why the words—Know Thyself—were inscribed above the entrance to the temple of Apollo at Delphi. Derek Parfit is a British philosopher who specialises in problems of personal identity and he proposes that we separate the notions of identity and survival. He is one of the most prominent philosophers in the struggle to define the self. Parfit’s 1971 essay “Personal Identity” targets two common beliefs which are central to the earliest conversations about personal identity. The first belief is about the nature of personal identity; all questions regarding this must have an answer. Between now and any future time, it is either the case that “I shall exist or I shall not”.
For many years, the issue of self-identity has been a problem that philosophers and scholars have been to explain using different theories. The question on self –identity tries to explain the concept of how a person today is different from the one in the years to come. In philosophy, the theory of personal identity tries to solve the questions who we are, our existence, and life after death. To understand the concept of self-identity, it is important to analyze a person over a period under given conditions. Despite the numerous theories on personal identity, the paper narrows down the study to the personal theories of John Locke and Rene Descartes, and their points of view on personal identity.

We then start to see the world “as it is”, and not as we expect it to be, or want it to be, or what we fear it might be! It consists of starting to focus our attention on our breath, as it flows in and out of the body.
