Self-leadership and sense of responsibility is one of the attributes of an effective leader. Self-leadership refers to the process of leading one’s own actions and mindset through the use of behavioral and cognitive strategies (Manz, 1986; Manz & Neck, 2004; Neck & Manz, 2010). It includes self-understanding, self-management, self-reflection, self-monitoring, self-cueing and self-talking. Responsibility means the ability to choose one’s response to a situation and consider one’s behavior as a product of one’s conscious choice rather than a product of the circumstances (Covey, 2003). The five concepts related to this attribute are creativity, openness to experience, conscientiousness, emotional stability and goal achievement.
For the first concept, conscientiousness is one of the components constructing one’s life paths. Humans have autonomous behaviours depending on their levels of conscientiousness (Costa & McCrae, 1992). When there is a old lady passing the traffic, one has the choice to help her cross the road by holding her arm or walk away. One with a level of conscientiousness will choose to help the old lady because he thinks he has the ability or even has the

According to Stogdill (1950), it can be seen that one must have the sense of responsibility to his task in order to motivate himself to finish the task. Self-leadership can be seen as an act of influencing the activities in its effort toward goal achievement. On the way of goal achievement, one must consider social values, not only those related to himself but also related to the society as well. If his goals involve in harming others’ interests, he will possibly be stopped or judged on his path of goal achievement. Consequently, goal achievement can be self-rewarding, self-motivating and we have to consider social responsibilities when trying to achieve the
The first behavior trait that demonstrates a successful leader is self-awareness, which consist of being aware of their behavior and how this can affect others around them. These leaders can analyze the feelings and thoughts of their staff and present themselves as their authentic self (Leroy, Palanski, & Simons, 2012). The second positive leadership behavior is self-management. Self-management consist of having control over your own behavior with the ability to manage actions, performance, and find resources that will contribute to a positive attitude to keep from reflecting negative feelings onto others you work with (Breevaart, Bakker, Demerouti, 2014). The last behavior that demonstrates a positive leadership is social awareness.
Path goal theory thoroughly examined the relationship between leaders and followers. It examine how leaders motivate subordinates in pursuit of objectives. It implied that leadership is not enforced on subordinates but exercised in conjunction with them, recognising that often leadership is wanted by those that are led, not imposed on them. Path goal theory emphasise on directive leadership which involved clear command, recognise and assign tasks, indicating how and when the task to be completed and the standards expected. This is a style of leadership that is familiar to most commanders and leaders.
In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.

Leadership Thought Prior to 1900 The earliest study of leadership thought would be the “Great Man Theory. This theory conceptualized leaders as a single “Great Man” who knew everything and influenced others to follow him. In leadership discourse, the Great Man theory—an assertion that certain individuals, certain men, are gifts from God placed on earth to provide the lightening needed to uplift human existence—is associated mainly with Thomas Carlyle (Spector, 2015, p.250). The focal-point of this theory is that leaders’ skills are inherent and set that them apart from those around them and that these traits enable them to assume roles of power and authority.
Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 1999; Yukl, 2002; Northouse,2013) The main components that have been identified to play a role in leadership are relations between leader and subordinates, interaction form between leader and followers, the influence that the leader has, the way in which the leader behaves and finally a leader’s traits. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
In reading the book, Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager, I learned more than I thought I would regarding assumed constraints, celebrating your points of power and collaborating for success. I had not realized how the past interferes with the present and future. For me, I like to think I let go of the past to move forward; however, I have now realized that I still assume present and future constraints based on the past. When working with the unions, I tend to be a bit reserved in pushing the boundaries due to a horrible incident that occurred with my predecessor. There are valuable opportunities that I let go by due to the way issues have gone in the past.

LEADERSHIP Ogbeidi (2012) found that leadership is referred as “ability to lead, direct and organize a group”. The study of leadership has developed scientifically through changing paradigms during its history where several models and theories have tried to explain the concept of leadership. Kuchler (2008) acknowledges that although subject of leadership is diverse and somewhat scattered but it tends to be one of the most widely discussed topics by the researchers all over the world. We found myriad definitions of leadership after studying detailed literature on it. The concept of leadership is described by different researchers with different perspectives.
This paper will examine the three leadership theories, identify how they apply to my practice, and explore how these theories interact with each other. The Trait Leadership Theory is based on the belief that a person is born with special traits contributing to natural leadership abilities. Studies of famous historical leaders have been used to identify various traits for this theory. Although the list of traits differs from study to study, there are five major traits that are consistent throughout most studies.
What Leadership Means to Me Leadership means mentoring, guiding, demonstrating and educating members of your team to include yourself. By facilitating growth of knowledge, modeling the way, encouraging open-communication, transparency, shared values and equal “at-stakeness”. Team members will be effective in achieving the organization’s goals as well as their own. The values which form my leadership practices are communication – clear and transparent, honesty and integrity, respect for oneself and others, responsibility, task focus and teamwork. Current Professional Environment Currently I am employed as a Service Desk manager.
Leaders are made, not born. The Great Man Theory suggests that people inherit qualities and traits that make them better suited for leadership. “To suggest that leaders do not enter the world with extraordinary endowment is to imply that people enter the world with equal abilities, with equal talents.” (Thomas Carlyle 1840) While it is true that there are certain characteristics that leaders are born with that predispose them to become leaders, the influence of these characteristics are often overexaggerated.
This paper is going to encompass different leadership theories and their relevance to my own personal personality and method of leadership. There will be information on the advantages and disadvantages of the leadership theories and information on each including examples. The purpose of this paper is to view various kinds of leadership theories and apply them to a real-life scenario. Leadership Theories There are quite a few different leadership theories available for people to take information from and use in business settings and even personal settings.
