Introduction
On one of my social media accounts, I describe myself as a “hesitant leader”. I have often walked away from leadership opportunities and chosen to rather contribute from the crowd rather than lead due to a fear of being found lacking by others. As I grew and moved from one job to the other and one position to the next, I found that one cannot avoid leadership altogether as it does not refer to leading others also but that one needs to be able to lead oneself as well.
My name is Karabo Ramookho, a wife, mother of three and a Regional Marketing Manager where I have one direct report. Although I regard myself as someone with above average levels of intelligence, I struggle from time to time to see myself as one of the individuals who are seen as the one most set to succeed as a leader, resilient and tough. All qualities I have come to associate with true, natural born leaders.
In an article that formed part of a recent class’ pre-reading, Goleman (2004) states that “effective leaders are also distinguished by a high degree of emotional intelligence, which includes self-awareness, self regulation, motivation, empathy and social skill.” (para 01) And so, a journey that was started years ago, punctuated with self-doubt, high highs and very lows, continues.
What is a leader

The biggest take out for me was realizing that the result of another test that I took in the week spoke to how I am seen by my peers, colleagues and manager. The Blake and Mouton Managerial Grid Leadership Self Assessment Questionnaire uses a list of leadership behavior statements that you then rate according to how you feel they apply to you. Your total score then determines if you are an Authoritarian Leader (high task, low relationship), Team Leader (high task, high relationship), Country Club Leader (low task, high relationship) or an Impoverished Leader (low task, low
The introduction Clara Barton is one of the nursing leaders that shaped history (Kerfoot 1998). Clara Barton will be the main focus of this assignment as she was a remarkable woman who started off as an educator and then a clerk and then a nurse and then one of the founders of Red Cross in America. In a time when women were not educated and were not even offered jobs she worked side by side with men. She was from the Not for Profit Sector. Her field was Nursing and she tackled with providing healthcare to those in natural disasters or war.
1. As a young Fire Control Technician Third Class (FT3), I served under Fire Control Technician Chief (FTC) Chuck Thompson. Strong and proud, he stood like a massive oak tree in every room he entered; his mere presence demanded respect.
At this time of year, I begin to look back at my life after 12 hard years of schooling. Throughout the course of my life, there have been many ups and downs, but these up and downs is what made me who I am today. These influences have shaped my values, attitudes and beliefs towards life. There have been many important people and events that has impacted my life. One of which is family and the media.
Lani: I was helping for someone’s project for COMM 245; I was in the video lab, in the studio. I was on campus and decided to contact everyone I knew who comes to the school. I remember I sent out a snap saying guys I think there is a shooting, be careful and then I started sending out individual texts to people making sure they were okay, like hey are you good? Stay out of an area.

According to Daniel Goleman (1998), Emotional Intelligence is "the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships. Leadership influences the behaviors, attitudes and thoughts of others. Effective leaders help others navigate obstacles and challenges. They can also encourage and inspire those around them.
To be a successful leader, emotional intelligence become an important course of growth and development of leadership in terms of building blocks in establishing relationship and deepening relationship with subordinates. According to Goleman’s emotional intelligence model (2001), four component include self awareness, self management, social awareness and relationship management. I found out that Kathy Smith is lacking in the area of social
It is easy to doubt your abilities and it is immensely helpful to have understanding, relatable friends/coworkers to turn to. I hope to be just like the returning RAs my starting year: open-minded, optimistic, reliable, honest, and determined. Being mindful of the needs I had, and adjusting to theirs, is important to me. “Lead by example” is my favorite type of leadership, because I feel that it is so effective. It means to be confident in your own values and decisions to lead without having to worry about teaching to others orally.
In the article “Defining Leadership Language and Guiding Models” it states,“ Therefore, leaders are the individuals with or without positions of authority, working together to tackle a tough problem”( Defining Leadership Language and Guiding Models 14). This statement accurately defines what a leader is and
Leadership interview I was given the chance to interview Hailey Hunt who has a position on student council. She taught me about her position and how she has been able to help others. She has taught me the many sides of being a leader and how it can be quite trying at times. I have found interviewing a leader is very different from researching about a leader.
During my time in high school, I was responsible for leading a fund raising charity event. Aside from this experience I have not been in situations where I have shown or developed valuable leadership qualities (L1,2,3), however after attending the ‘Women in Industry’ event (appendix) I was motivated by these women to look for ways to develop these leadership skills further. If I can develop leadership qualities I can gain a competitive advantage to reach a managerial and higher paying position in my career. Emotional intelligence and leadership are therefore intertwined.
I have had many leadership experiences in my career, most of them are all good experiences which I reflect on from time to time and has helped me set the foundation of my leadership style. The ones I seem to go back to the most are all the bad examples. For me I always look to see where he or she might have failed and apply it to myself, so I can learn from their mistakes. I constantly do a self check of myself and adjust when necessary. Doing the LPI 360 showed some weak spots and was a great tool to see where I am at.
A sense of accomplishment is invaluable to a person. Not only does a sense of accomplishment build confidence and faith in oneself, but it also allows one to reflect on how wonderful the journey to the accomplishment was, and how every little struggle and triumph was worth it. In the middle of summer, where time seems endless and the stress of the previous school year has been shed by students, I never expected to find out that I scored a five on both of the advanced placement exams I took. Nor did I have one-hundred percent confidence the goals we set as section leaders of the marching band would actually be met. Yet to my surprise, I had the good fortune of accomplishing challenging things in both aspects of my life.
An understanding of what precisely creates emotional intelligence is essential not simply due to the capacity that is so fundamental to leadership but because some people are strong in some of its elements which can be totally lacking in others (Ovans, 2015). The overall result of (Kerr, et al, 2005) data analysis shows that the person’s emotional intelligence may be a key to effective
Self-leadership in its basic form is the leadership of oneself. However, how one leads themselves and if they do so effectively determines whether their leadership journey will become a transformational one (Neck, Manz, & Houghton, 2017). This transformational journey of self-leadership must begin by discovering one’s vocation, mastering mindfulness, and feeding one’s curiosity as these three tools lay the foundation from upon which to build. Self-Leadership Self-leadership is how one influences themselves to achieve their goals or objectives. It is grounded in behavioral and cognitive strategies and “addresses not only how but also what and why” to aid in positivity and productivity (Neck et al., 2017).
