As a result of theoretical thematic coding of the interviews of students, the following themes were extracted. As previously mentioned, the semi-structured interviews were based on time management process model. Therefore, one of the focus areas of the questions was about the first factor of time management which was goal setting. Interviewees were asked if they set goals for doing their tasks beforehand, and what tools or criteria they use for their goal settings? The first finding about goal setting was that students were not able to set long-term goals at the beginning of the semester or for a period of time more than 2 weeks. However, they set goals for each of the tasks or assignments that they should deliver when they are introduced by …show more content…
Students stated that they use due dates of the assignments as a criterion for setting their main goals. They stated that they find due dates on the calendar and to-do list. One of the problems that students expressed related to their goal setting based on to-do list was that it does not show all the deadlines for the next few weeks and do not let them to customize the list. The other problem they had was with calendar. They mentioned that although readings are necessary for their learning process, calendar do not show them because they do not have due dates. The second extracted theme related to short-term goal settings were about assignment’s structures. They use the structure that the instructor provided in the descriptions of the assignments for their short-term goal settings. Some instructors provide a list of bullet points items as the requirements of doing an assignment, suggest a sequence of activities, or provide a guidance for completing a task. This division of the main task into several sub-tasks is considered a form of scaffolding. Scaffolding in this setting refers to the learning process that happens by the interaction of the student with the guidance of instructor to gain a new level of skill or knowledge. This new level could not have been reached without this interaction. Thus, scaffolding is a tool in the learning process of students. More scaffolding of the assignments by the instructor, led to setting shorter term goals by the students and these goals were easier to follow and
This will support students by working cooperatively with the teacher to increase their understanding of each requirement (Borich, 2011). Focus Student 1 (Above Proficient) was among this group that met or exceeded the standard in every area identified in the rubric. Additionally, student 1 will be provided enrichment activities to progress his learning. I will build upon their knowledge using strategies to increase my student’s understanding of how to prepare an informative explanatory text using topics that consider the audience. These strategies will assist them with providing credible facts and definitions, well developed points, and a concluding statement that is relative to the topic in their text.
After reading this week’s chapters from our textbook, one interesting topic that was discussed in chapter five was classifying instructional objectives. When a teacher wants to design objectives, it is important that they use three domains and they are the cognitive domain, affective domain, and psychomotor domain. The cognitive domain involves mental operations from the lowest level of the simple recall of information to complex, high-level evaluative process (Carjuzaa & Kellough, 2017, pg. 136). The affective domain involves feelings, attitudes, and values and ranges from the lower levels of acquisition to the highest level of internalization and action (Carjuzaa & Kellough, 2017, pg. 136). Psychomotor domain ranges from the simple manipulation
Scaffolding techniques are the means by which the more knowledgeable other, a teacher, guides the learner within the learner’s own zone to reach a greater understanding and mastery of the task. The teacher can give verbal cues to help Sofi or provide her with a stronger pair of scissors. The teacher can also provide her with different materials to work on. Encouragement and praises may also help Sofi to gain confidence in completing the
Time management has been one of the most substantial hurdles of my scholastic and professional career. Many of us waste our time on things that are neither important nor necessary, instead of using that time for something of that is meaningful. To capitalize on the use of time management strategies and reach my Doctoral Business Administration (DBA) program goals. I will execute two specific time management strategies, for example, accessing and planning a weekly schedule while adjusting my daily schedule. Time management will help me maximize the use of my time and reach my ultimate DBA goals of completing each assignment.
I have been writing important due dates and events on them. Prior to this, I would remember information solely through memorization. The planner has helped to improve my organization skills. No longer do I complete the assignment the night before and my grades demonstrate the change. In order to make sure I have sufficient time to complete each task, I have formulated time frames.
This is something that everyone must show as it is a “process success criterion”. Two examples will be displayed. They will be modelled by the teacher, but he will try to obtain as much information as possible from the students. As asserted by Holton and Clarke (2006), conceptual scaffolding should be provided in order to move students through ZPD. By the time the model questions have been completed, the scaffolding will almost be completely removed and the students will be working independently.
I learned in this activity how crucial time management skills will be to my ability to complete this course successfully. The analysis from the questionnaire (Table 2) as well as keeping a record of what activities I focus on for a couple of days, opened my eyes to a few areas of improvement. From the patterns observed I could see that most of my time was taken up by work and commitments as well as procrastination. Not being able to juggle theses successful led to irritation and was unproductive. Research suggests that managing ones emotions, being self-aware and self-motivate can be factors for success for a student (Allan, 2009).
Stations or centers might be teacher-led if new knowledge is to be given or student-led if mastery is to be obtained on the information given by the teacher. Project-based is another strategy and one of the best ways to differentiate instruction due to the students’ needs and styles are addressed. Projects internalize help and support among students beside some academic skills. Tiered Activities, on the other hand, are based on the learning tasks designed at different levels of complexity according to students’ readiness levels, i.e. to be gradually given to the students ,whenever the student finishes one stage, they transfer to the other one until the task is done, or at times keeping the learning outcomes same the learning tasks can be designed according to students’ learning preferences viz. Learning styles or Gardner’s multiple intelligences.
Time management is important to have because it helps get work done more efficiently and is a way to manage your priorities. Priorities along with making commitments are also learned from participating in a extra activity. Students learn how to prioritize their work when in activities while also finding a balance of everything else going on in their life; commitment is also learned but showing that a student needs to be 100% involved to put in their best effort to whatever they choose to do and to be be successful doing it. “Various research studies have lined participation in student activities to higher math and english grades, improved grades and homework completion, better performance on math, reading and science test, and an increased likelihood of applying to college” (Annemarie Mannion).
It involves setting goals and managing your time. Developing my motivation and concentration skills will help me to overcome the lure of procrastination. Effective self-management will help me to avoid stress and provide me with more opportunities to get times to finish my
Time management: Time management is a very crucial component if you are willing to have a productive lifestyle. To be honest, I have always had issues with managing my time efficiently. This problem had become a huge obstacle once I got into college. Thus, attending a lecture that focuses on time management helped me a lot with this problem by introducing me to different aspects related to time management: planning, SMART goals, and important/urgent matrix. Learning to make a specific plan for my daily tasks and make a to-do list to make my day as productive as possible is something very helpful which was advised to me by the instructor of this lecture Mr. Irfan.
Instead of forgetting about an assignment that is due tomorrow, a student can already be ahead of the game by knowing when things are due. One way is to get a planner. A planner is a great way to keep organized. Use the syllabus the teachers give you, and write down the assignments that are due ahead of time. This allows the student to get a look of what is coming up.
Vygotsky mentioned that the “gap” between what learners can do easily and what learners can do with the help of a more knowledgeable other based on his concept of Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Thus, the most effective learning takes place when the task given to the learners is a level higher than the learners’ actual knowledge (i+1). Knowledge is best transferred when the teacher co-operates and discuss with the learners. The importance of scaffolding is its contribution to the teacher-learning relationship. It focuses on the role of teacher and learners which are distinct but complementary in the learning context (Gibbons, 2002).
“I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by” (Douglas Adams). Very often students are faced with deadlines. Specifically teachers love to assign writing essays. Every student has to write essays and every child in the United States has to go to school.
a. Students need a lot of time to do revision, do their assignments and have many tests. If not, they cannot complete task on time and they need burn the midnight oil to finish the task. b. Students will face stress because they cannot pass up their tasks on time.
